Lately all I can do for these lists is to title what sweet I'm eating at the exact moment so while I'm in the high of a vegan chocolate cupcake with peanut butter icing, this is what I have to offer the world -- but no, you may not have my cupcake! Mine!

Secret Life of Walter Mitty Ben Stiller Style

We all read it in high school, disillusioned man goes completely Tom Ewell in Seven Year Itch in his daydreams but instead of stress-inducing anxiety (Since Seven Year Itch was a huge headache when Marilyn wasn't in the scene) we have WW2 delusions where Mitty is the hero instead of a victim (hmm, Wilder may have been influenced by this short story...) but why tamper with Danny Kaye's performance in the 40s film version? Because this is Hollywood, and Hollywood likes to fuck up good adaptations case in point, the latest news as of early this month with Ben Stiller possibly playing Mitty. In a modern world, the movie would be degraded into every other movie Stiller has played as a loser-incarnate. (You do realize his two shining moments was The Royal Tennanbaums and Heavyweights? I love that movie...) so why mess with it? Ugh!

While we're on the topic of movies based around WW2, I have a good question I always ask: what would have happened if Germany was still the top grossing movie nation like it used to be in the 20s without WW2 happening... would Germany be the Hollywood of today and mainstream movies wouldn't suck? Food for thought...

Get To Know Their Face

Dwindling in my Vspot Bookmark folder for so many weeks I cannot remember the source of the blog or the magazine, but someone in this world posted their soundcloud to which I support this with my face melted in a total Le Kid kind of way. This is pop music at its finest with some pretty gorgeous British women -- a fair trade.

"Turn Me On Dammit"

From beautiful British women to my favorite female ethnicity... country... whatever you want to call it, Norway has god a whole lot more sexual and we all know I'm approving this with mouth agape and eyes bulging with happiness. Thank you, Nylon Magazine! In an article that features the lead of Helene Bergsholm as Alma, a hormonal 15 year old living vicariously in her fantasies in school and at her part time job while in that high school hope "the cute boy," Artur (Mathias [Mah-tea-es] Myren) will notice. Oh he will notice her, and while the results are sad, this is the grittiest we will ever see adolescence outside of the U.S. that doesn't involve bullying. I haven't even seen a trailer but already my heart has this movie as a special place and NOT because of hot Norwegian girls masturbating (although it's a perk!) but because after watching Sweden's "Show Me Love" it's an indication that the Scandinavians know how to film adolescence in their movies instead of sticking to the similar plot and stereotypes in Hollywood teenage chick flicks.

Uma Thurman joins Smash!!

For the third Vspot list in a row, Smash truly has a wonderful place in my heart despite cashing in on some of the mythical Marilyn versus the Marilyn I see in my mind, although I call her Norma Jeane. (If you want to watch a great Marilyn with dramatic potential movie, watch Don't Bother to Knock, your mind shall be blown into kibble!) But moving on from her and into the TV show that pays wonderful  homage to her, there's another blond in town. Proving she has the dancing and singing chops in the musical movie version of "The Producers" Uma Thurman is coming to Smash as a star who dabbles with the thought of playing Marilyn. A little old for the Smash-version of Marilyn? Maybe. But this makes it harder to decide who should win the role, McPhee or Hilty. Don't ask me to choose!

Alphabeat Does Vacation

What's better than Danish pop band Alphabeat's song "Fascination" where they totally pull a Tom Green "say the word" in their bridge? A comeback, and a comeback that's so perfect with a single that sounds like it will be in summer commercials all over America if Alphabeat plays their cards right. Oddly and wonderfully put out on the first day of Spring Break, this is this spring/summer's anthem! Watch them sing this magic on the finale of Denmark's X Factor then Lil Anders duets with finalist Line on their huge hit, The Spell. Have I mentioned this performance includes women dancers as sexy flight attendances? Um, yeah.

Karen Walker Insect Dress

THIIIISSS!!!

Once more... thank you Nylon!

Romeo and Juliet Goes Buckley

One of my best film crews next to Tim Burton's entourage thought they could top Romeo and Juliet as a guys with shaved heads and 90s punk rock and Radiohead rifts with William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet . Well I almost feel guilty to say that, Luhrmann, Bilcock (my favorite editor ON THIS EARTH!) be very careful because someone is taking over the Shakespeare tragedy on Broadway. Luhrmann loves his broadway so this may injure his theatrical little heart.

"The Last Goodbye" is a musical treatment with Jeff Buckley tunes has been going on for two years now, but just recently cited in Nylon Magazine as Kristen Connolly's (Mona Lisa Smile) latest acting gig before starting on Joss Whedon's "The Cabin" which is also on my must-watch list. How did I not know about this and why didn't someone tell me about this 2 years ago? Off to youtube I go for clips..
I have a different attitude on Spring Break than others -- I live in an ultimate Bohemian paradise, why would I ever leave even when I still was in college? So, I make two rules since graduating three years ago (three years? damn) on proper Iowa City Spring Break etiquette

1. Talk to EVERYONE you can on random silly comments. (Because people, whether behind the cash register or that cute girl in the sundress and motorcycle boots hanging out at the coffee house -- ahem, not talking from experience -- are just naturally nicer than any other week in the year.

2. Ladies, take advantage of the great weather and wear only skirts, dresses and leggings for the week, it'll amp up your attitude a little more.

So in light of these two rules, or more rule number 2, this is what I did my spring break, or rather the highlights, or the highlights surrounding spring break (and mind you, I have a love-hate relationship with spring because I get hot really easily so I either have to wear less layers or more layers depending on the weather and spring is a difficult little bastard like that.)

Saturday, March 10th

While a little nippy for this adorable dark blue and light purple polka dots (obscure colors for polka dots), I found this lovely little shirt-dress, or maybe a mini-night gown for $8.50 at Ragstock on the "Modern Dress" rack (my new God). While it's probably not spring material I did wear an awkward open long sleeve cardigan (the ones that are asymmetrical at the bottom) tucked it in and went around feeling the wind through my bra, but my cleavage never looked better than that night meeting a bunch of my guy friends's friends via Applebees and bowling all the while explaining Don Marquis's comics and poems collection "Archy and Mehitabel." (I am a geek, profoundly.)

Monday, March 12th
This is the dress that's made famous by Trendy Spring Commandments # 1, there is nothing wrong with finding a dress and building a whole outfit on it just to wear the first day of Spring Break, and unleashing all your upperback tattoos. While the waist hits me at just the right spots, clearly this dress was made for a bustier girl (case in point, finding it at Ragstock on the "Modern Dress" rack as well for 8.50) then running into said bustier girl who was wearing the dress the same day as you!! (awkward). Needless with my super-round shoulders this dress is a mix of fail and win. The win? THE BOOTS! Oh Sweet Baby Buddha the BOOTS! These bad boys are from Lorenz 2.0 (a great local shoe store that always has great sales, great for off-season shoes) and at the cheapest of their fashion boots at 25 dollars. After having to break them in for a few days earning a really narly scratch on my heel it was sooo worth it. Now they don't hurt anymore and they look amazing with all these dresses on this post!

Wednesday, March 14th
I wouldn't wear the polka dot "night shirt" without a belt because the pattern is so tiny it would otherwise look lifeless on me, but when you have colored jeans, it can be used to your advantage -- in pure 40s style. And that I did with this, my $12 red jeans, rolled up and slightly cuffed with black sandals to look so completely pin-up girl inspired, right along with bright-red lips, pig tails with my Juno "Puppy-Dog ears" layer of hair falling to the sides of my face and the most important part to this outfit -- the perfect cat eye. This may or may not have resulted in many Marilyn Monroe inspired pictures with her facial expressions -- like you've never done it in the privacy of your... vanity...

Ragstock has been very good to me over this past March, but skirts are so touch and go with me -- they say short girls with my height should wear long skirts, it helps us look taller but I still look like an oompa loompa and I have to find a "just right" skirt that hits right above my knees given a girl like me always has to wear leggings or a spanx like under every skirt and dress because the thighs are danger zones that stick to each other. So when I make the occasional scavenge in the 8 dollar hippie skirt rack, most often I won't be disappointed like when I look through the mini-skirts. Very rarely do I wear anything with bare legs, but unfortunately you cannot see my shoe choice for this outfit with my black sketcher tennis shoes and scrunched down argyle socks looking very 80s with the vest (which I am wearing right now actually) and mix and matching the patterns from the tie-dye effects on the skirt with the pin stripes. This is in right now, and while more bold prints are in vogue, some of us have to be very careful with what prints we put on our body (I'm looking at you, Glamour magazine!)

Friday, March 23rd
And of course, the "Obligatory Floral Print Dress" which every fashionister should have in her closet this spring/summer, and one that flatters her as well as doesn't overpower any of the curves, which is so important to look pattern placement. BE PICKY! And I was completely picky with this 16 dollar dress, pulling Trendy Spring Commandment # 1 again with the buying of a white cardigan to put over this when Spring has her period and gets a little nipply. But either way, even I cannot stop staring at the picture of this dress -- I could make a list of all it's magical attributes (and this wasn't the dress I was looking for!)
  • Blue and pink - I hardly ever wear either color! (Looks up at skirt, well, sometimes...) But my ideal pink always has a tint of brown in it because dirty pink looks so good with my skin tone Blue though? I have a strange relationship with the color blue, I used to love it in high school but now I reserve it for accessories in more green-tinted shades (the necklace in the above picture and the blue manicure I have right now) to really show off its blue-ness. I like my blues to pop out, and the blue flowers on this dress is no exception.
  • The formation of the dress in general is too perfect for my body, there's just a little tightness in the outward seam in the shoulder that hangs over my tiny-as-hell arms but I forgive that BUT THE BEST PART is what you can barely see on the left portion of the dress, the oh-so tiny pleats that start from the idea waistline for me (right under the breast, if you're reading and attribute your body size to mine, this is your ideal dress shape) but after staring at the dress for awhile there is even tiny ruffled pleat around the waistline of this thing that helps lift up the boobs and accentuate the hips.
  • This is the dress I want to style my hair in pin curls into and go completely Mad Men inspired. But unfortunately some of us are blessed with very flat thin hair that hates all product if it isn't Got2B or anything for thin hair, yet a girl can dream...

Presenting Amanda Seyfried as tan… and a brunette … and making her pose in skinny Men’s Magazine poses.  (I want my 24 hour gap birthday girl mate blond and luminous as she is, not clearly photoshopped in the face and eyes, refer to Reason #3)

Headlining Katharine McPhee in “Everyone’s Pulling a Marilyn” over Megan Hilty!

Reminding me that 23 % of women of my age group are shallow in doctoring their personal photos to “look better.” (Retouching: How Much is Too Much?)

Many girls, like myself, have to be careful with our prints and have to actually try on a dress to make sure before deciding what printed dress is best on us because we don’t have a standard body size. (it’s called trial and error, not let’s read a magazine to decide) (Spring Fashion/Shop the Trends)

Not devoting a larger article to Max Greenfield (Schmidt from “New Girl”)

Many of the trend fashions (Bright pants/skirts, shorts,          heels, ) may not actually work on all body types and there should be an explicit warning or exceptions written.

Categorizing body type in only 3 sizes! (We are all women here, we know this is so true -- oh wait, fashion was originally conceived by men? Oh never mind then *eyeroll*)

Not including Essie’s “Calicos and Turquoise” polish in “OMG… Green Nails!”

The bottomline of listening to Fun.’s new album “Listen now and you’ll be able to say you knew them when.” (Uuuuhhh, you do know that Some Nights is their sophomore album, right?)

Holding an anti-food torch with shallow journalism, i.e. “Avocado: the healthy fat - It keeps you feeling full. A good thing!”(I thought women were finally undergoing a new attitude on health… Glamour must still be in the skinny-at-all-costs agenda... then two or three pages later posing the question “Can you be fat and healthy?”)

So it’s supposed to make me feel better about my own health that celebrities admit exercise suck?

Most Inconsistent Article of the Month Award goes to “Are You the Star of Your Life?” (Because I’m supposed to be both a diva but to “up our wattage a little, or a lot.” So which is it? We spend more than enough time balancing so many abstractions as women, Glamour, cut us a damn break!)

What They Did Right...

  • Showing Kesha’s beautiful freckles (I am obsessed with her freckles now!)
  • Thank you for sounding off on photo-shop, does that mean you’ll make a non-touched up edition someday soon?
  • Promoting avocadoes despite the shitty write-up
  • Promoting Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer SPF 15 (A permanent fixture in my beauty toolbox)
  • Making a shout out to Downton Abbey
  • Letting model and rock-child Chelsea Tyler grace your pages

Looks like spring has sprung and sprung a leak, cue umbrellas and singing all songs that involve umbrellas (Rhianna, Dressy Bessy, etc.). Anyway, my Vspot bookmark folder is overflowing with stereogum articles and people should know about the things that make me oh so excited!

Smashing Into a Renewal

Only 8 episodes in and with the strange power of holding me back from multitasking in staring at the screen, NBC finally renews Smash for twelve more episodes according to tvline.com. YAY. Enough said. And what about Bernadette Peters singing "Everything's Comin' Up Roses" this week? Oh dear lord, I felt like I was having a stroke of multiple voguegasms. Bernadette still has it.

Sharon van Etten Continues to get Bigger...

...And closer to Iowa City with the release of her single and kaleidoscopic music video of Tramp/Life of His Own. Did I fail to mention Sharon actually has this amazing smile that melted my knee caps in the video? Regardless, she is still rocking the music scene... albeit subtly. Did I mention she was also on Conan O'Brien crooning the huge hit? Next Friday cannot come any sooner.

Life of His Own

Get Ready, 'Cos CALLmeKAT is back

From one sexily vocal stringed woman to another, the woman who has epitomized Britney Spears covers for the rest of eternity for me, Katerine Ottersen is back with a 5-track album "Where the River Turns Black" with heavy synthy music much like her first album "Fall Down." I have strong hopes for her to mold another cover song, but a girl can always dream. "Where the River Turns Black" comes out officially March 26th.

Joanna Newsom Releases "Instrumental 1999"

Barely with a title but with so much beauty in the first sparse notes of Newsom's harp, the instrumental has one thing critically missing and that's her angelic voice, pre-surgery although. No matter, if you want a great free download, it's here at stereogum.

From "Pop Goes the World" to "Perfect World"

Beth Ditto is my plus-sized hero, well next to Nikki Blonsky but Blonsky has never posed nude before. So what is our ballsy front-woman to The Gossip doing these days, besides raking in extra cash from selling "Heavy Cross" to Dior, which Charlize Theron struts down the cat-walk to? Well, it looks like recording and making new LP "A Joyful Noise" with Brian Heggins from Xenomania. Again, it's all here at stereogum. every last 80s-inspired  note of the great single.

Bon Iver's S. Carey is Still Trucking with Solo Work

Justin Vernon may be grooming the next Bon Iver album and beard he attained from writing the last album, but it looks like the Eau Claire native will be putting out a new EP, Hoyas at a yet determined date later this spring. But by the sound of the first single "Two Angles" which is very inspired from Vernon, this sounds what the otherworld must sound like.

Dark Shadows Preview - Win or Fail?

Jury's still out considering Dark Shadows movie, although I had so much hope for it, documented in "October 20th's "Shut Up It's Not That Cold Out" Hot Spot Vspot" with great hope of the writing done by Seth Grahame-Smith, Tim Burton's sense of space and mise en scene with Depp's presence to top it all off. So what happened? In the trailer it looks like a typical spin of all those TV-series turned into movies, "Beverly Hillbillies" and "The Brady Bunch" which is a commentary on how society has changed. Why would anyone want to watch this? Um, take another watch of the preview, Eva Green's cleavage of course! Despite my adoration for the four people involved (Burton, Depp, Green and Bonham-Carter), I know no one should judge until watching the whole thing but you have to wonder, is adaptation so difficult that you have to put it into that "TV characters in the modern day" format?

1. It is perfectly OK to buy a complete outfit to wear on the warmest day without a jacket.

2. Staying home on a Friday night may sound miserable, but it's even better to spice it up with an oatmeal/egg white/honey facial and painting your nails so you look good for the coming week.

3. Thou shall change up your hair product brands, it may even be better for your hair.
(Recommendation: Garnier Fructise XXL Pump for thin hair)

4. There's nothing wrong with looking weird with your fashion choices; spring is a hard and unpredictable season to dress for.

5.You are still allowed to be drinking hot tea, it's not too hot out yet.

6. It is more than fine that your nails are decked out in stereotypical spring polish.

7. Do not be ashamed to be reading so much Glamour magazine you start making lists like them. *eyeshift*

8. Changing up the way you put on eyeliner is perfectly acceptable, sometimes a mistake may actually look cool.

9. To have a "Whimsy and Cute" playlist on your mobile music device, it's even better to be played with a cute sundress on (worn ironically of course!)

10. Thou shall wear yellow on a crap day, it'll make you more sunshiny-er.
After damn near killing myself on Oscars day with organizing every post under labels, posting FOUR posts in one day and gaining three new followers by relentlessly commentating on every last move of the award show. I was exhausted and took a well-deserved break. Now I'm back and singing Julie Andrews... or the Golden Filter, whichever version of the song you prefer! (Speaking of new followers; God dag (good afternoon in Norwegian) @emhill, @fabulousmalibu, and @adoaboutfashion)

Smash Keeps Smashing My Face in With Love

Unfortunately this doesn't mean I stop watching Glee, but to take a break from a wonderful train wreck you can't stop watching you can stare at new Broadway legend Megan Hilty (Wicked) channel Marilyn Monroe so well you'll immerse yourself with Marilyn Monroe's life with the two girls: Katharine McPhee the Norma Jeane aspect, fresh faced and inexperienced and the other the business-woman and addict. So no one should be surprised that I rented a MM marathon of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Niagara and Don't Bother to Knock. But as for my favorite Marilyn movie? It's a tie between Gentlemen... and The Prince and the Showgirl.

Rufus Wainwright's Love Song to His Daughter

What's better than a father singing to his daughter on his new album? Well when Rufus sings to his little Viva, he creates a song that is about family, two men raising a little girl together and the end result is just beautiful and a little heartbreaking because his voice can do that to you!

Lissy Trullie's New Video

Where do I start? Is she channeling Ryan Gosling in Drive like Nylon Magazine featured? Or the fact she's more effingly beautiful than the last time I saw her? Or she looks extremely badass... or what's with the driver? Either way, this short 2 minute song is not enough for my everlasting girl-crush on the LGBT figure.

Regina, Regina, Reh-ge-nah! (Like She Says in Pavlov's Daughter)

The great songstress is back! So of course stereogum made her a feature causing most of the cynics to grumble that her time is over -- hardly. Her new song, All The Rowboats from the upcoming "We Shaw From The Cheap Seats" LP in later Spring. All The Rowboats sounds like Apres Moi Part 2, strong and piano-driven and she sounds better than ever. Oh Regina, never stay away for too long!

Peggy Sue Got Video

It feels like only yesterday the historical Englert Theater was so packed for the Kate Nash concert I had no where to sit after being on my feet all day at my old job, my hamstrings murdering me in bad shoes until ... Rosa Slade attracted me to the stage and my eyes were glued to British girl-band Peggy Sue. Two years and a new album later, they finally release a second official music video for upcoming album Acrobats, Cut My Teeth and who else but the Nylon blogs has the video.

Criznittles Indie Darlings Do the Voice

Charlotte Sometimes
Criznittles, the strange username that releases magic at the beginning of every month with a 200 track torrent, epic song after epic song (well, it's touch and go for me and other picky music listeners) from his site Indie/Rock Playlist always knows talent when he hears it... or gets it recommended to him via facebook. So what happens when two girls that was on September and October playlists of last year make a debut on The Voice? Well, besides scream sacrilege that they would "sell out" but they have great songs, established LP's and EP's and now it's a matter of time the female singer-songwriters Lex Land and Charlotte Sometimes get that exposure they need.

Lex Land
Lex Land is like a Regina Spektor on guitar with intelligent lyrics and a beautiful voice that can get both serious and playful (case in point "Oh My" was on September's playlist) with country singer Blake Shelton as her coach, she may get more than just exposure. And my beautiful favorite Charlotte Sometimes (nee Jessica Charlotte Poland), vocalist and guitarist with lyrics that are more in the catchy realm of Charlotte Martin. Charlotte Sometimes has been almost a Indie/Rock Playlist veteran having been on both September (with "For You") and October's (with "Headaches") playlists but my personal favorite is "Waves and The Both of Us." She is also being coached by Shelton which makes me nervous that they won't be pitted against each other because I wouldn't know who would come out alive. VOTE THIS!

Hairspray's Nikki Blonsky Covers Gaga

Despite having been working in a hair parlor shop (all Hairspray puns begin and end hear) for the past year or so [since the "Huge's" cancellation] in order to keep it real, singer and actress Nikki Blonsky's soundcloud  and twitter account may have been bombarded with commands of her making a comeback after having put out an mp3 of her covering Lady Gaga's "On The Edge of Glory." Where Gaga's signature scratchy Emile Autumn-like voice (yes hardcore fans, I went there) puts out an angst in the song, Blonsky's smooth Broadway-trained voice makes the song joyous in a Godspell kind of way. The sad thing about her is is that no one wants to create roles for a large girl unless you're Melissa McCarthy shitting in a sink. That's not Blonsky, like what director Adam Shankman said in the Hairspray commentary, "It's like you stepped out from an old MGM film, where does THAT come from?" Cue Blonsky's adorable giggling.

Hey Revival Girls!

While on the bus today I ran into a girl wearing thick wool Men's style socks over tights... street fashion for the win?

Yea or Nay? I vote Yea but I cannot wear that with my oompa loompa legs.

E! News is now asking all the party-goers the singular question, "What was your take-away moment of the night" of the 94th Academy Awards and I wouldn't know where to start if that question was directed to me, was it the immaculate pain of folding my hands so hard wishing for The Artist to make a sweep and when I almost broke my knuckles praying for them to win Best Picture?

It happened. Oh yah, it happened.

"If I had 'em, I'd lick 'em. If I had 'em I'd lick 'em.."

You know, people could say all they want that Billy Crystal looked like my grandmother when she got her face-lift, but I thought he was wonderfully old school and hysterical in the inward circles of Hollywood. I love the feeling of inclusion and private jokes so his interaction and makeout with George Clooney and practically sitting on Marty Scorsese's lap as he sang his movie-song he's so well known for. Now that the majority have healed from last years I think we should expect only better hosts, like say, The Muppets?

Hugo did a well-deserved sweep of the aesthetics, which I was a little disappointed but if I had to second a movie next to The Artist, it would have to be Marty's beautiful opus to the process of film making and hard message to preserve old film. As someone who has pondered to go to grad school for the Moving Image Archiving Program, I respect this more than I can say. So yes, the right person in the end won for Cinematography, Art Direction, Sound, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects (although for the latter I was kinda hoping Harry Potter would have a gleaming moment). I had the same thought when Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall won for Best Editing for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. On twitter I wrote, "Girl with a Dragon Tattoo was my second choice after the Artist, dark films have great timing." Which they do considering how to create tension so the better man won in the end. Despite all I thought about the discrepancies of disability in the plot, this was the award to win for the movie. Oh and Baxter and Wall's acceptance speech was completely adorable calling Rooney Mara "Roons." Makeup had a surprising win in The Iron Lady and later on in the evening at the press conference backstage Meryl pointed out that movies often win that award for creating monsters and otherworldly things so the fact that they "built a person." Let's just admit the prosthetics were ten times more convincing than Kidman's nose in The Hours.

Zach Galifinakas and Will Ferrell cymbaling Best Song
In the theme of honoring the old Hollywood system and glamour, they attempted to youth up the awards with a Cirque du Soleil performance which took away any chance of the old format where the Best Song nominees would perform. Excuse me, I haven't seen The Muppets yet so seeing Jason Segel and his muppet-friend bust a move would have made my life a little more after sitting through that, although the montage that went on behind the performers looked top notch. I approve of that, at least.

I also approve of the silliness of the short 5 minute sketch including Jennifer Coolidge and others involving the old Hollywood system of the test screening of "The Wizard of Oz" basically ripping every aspect of the film and while it was silly and that darkly repressive humor that begs fascism, I found it hilarious because that repressive humor gets me at times. But I did not enjoy that Crystal treated the definition of test screening like they don't do it anymore. They do -- just with Blackberries and twitter.

"Say I'm Batman"

Again I stress the sadness I feel for the music in the past two years; it was said earlier on today in the pre-Red Carpet show that it would flow better and would also have a sense of "moving along" at an efficient pace, eliminating a majority of the music category was just disappointing. But... at... least... The Muppets... won for Best Song? I ask with large innocent anime eyes. I yearn for the days when there were more than two songs nominated as well as the performances, that was what made the Oscars for me when A.J. Rahman and Florence + the Machine sang a few years ago, that was magical. I'm almost frightened to say if they want to compact the awards they may as well just send out a mass email on blackberries that will leak online and there will be no award show. Ugh, I really don't like that thought. But onto happier things, like Original Score win number three for The Artist. And oddly I didn't cry when The Artist lost out to Midnight in Paris for Best Original Screenplay because well, I like that era Allen wrote but I may or may not have tweeted, "Quick Hazanvicius, grab the statue while you can Woody's not there to see it." But no need, Hazanvicius won for Best Director which I almost broke my knuckles from folding them together so hard in hope. But um... holla that Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash won for The Descendants for Adapted Screenplay, I guess? I had the feeling that movie was rather stale.

Angelina Jolie and her vogue pose.
But I really do not care for the jokes that any host goes on for the Documentary/Foreign/Short Films. They may be smaller and less Western-World approved and popular, but that does not give anyone reason to be teased, especially the harder working people who do the aesthetics or independent movies. I love and hate Hollywood all at once. But after tonight, I will watch all the adult Animated Films that lost to Rango (why I never know) and even Animated Short Film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore which is available on Itunes for free. And in subdued, yet slightly ignorant, respects to Iran's The Separation as Best Foreign Film and American Iranians who rejoice at their mother-country for winning the country's first film award; it shows I don't go for the munchies during the awards that seem to be "lesser than" the other more popular nominations.

But the other lesser-known film categories won valiantly from the football-addled Best Documentary Undefeated to the heartbreaking plastic surgery (for bad, take notes Hollywood) Best Documentary Feature, Saving Face. But clearly, the topics are so Western World approved, how is it that no one watches them?

"Have fun storming the Fuhrer" (I seriously broke my non-baby water over this one)

But I guess, onto the more "important" nominations and the races that I also almost break my knuckles over? My palms were so tight against each other as Jean Dujardin toppled both Clooney (who I will say over and over again, you bastard, you ARE NOT Cary Grant no matter how many women swoon over you) and Pitt in the Best Actor race. Most of the E! consultants found this a slight surprise, but why? I mean, saying more with just action and facial features is ten times more important than a plot-driven movie. It just shows how much movies are devolving over time. As for Best Actress? I had no expectations because it could have been anyone, but as I heard last year's Best Actor winner Colin Firth give his fifty cents to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady in their experiences together in Mamma Mia, "We danced, I was gay, we sang..." I knew she had to win. And, the reigning Oscar Nomination Queen finally won her THIRD! Only third? Award. That's still bewildering to me!

But, the shock wasn't as severe for the Supporting Actor/Actress winners, Christopher Plummer for Beginners which I did see was completely heartbreaking and one of those roles you're surprised that the Academy didn't have a qualm against the fact of a gay male activist role winning. I think it had something to do with "what will you do for the rest of your life if you had a time limit" but done so in a less The Bucket List kind of way.  But the real moment of the night was Supporting Actress winner Octavia Spencer for The Help was so shocked, and so touched by the standing ovation she had a momentary "I can't walk I'm so shocked" as she stood up. That is why we love the Oscars... and when your movie you hope wins a sweep but wins Best Picture instead like The Artist did. May I do a happy dance?
