Between slices of a cheap frozen Mexican pizza, homemade chocolate chip cookies and a big bottle of Lipton tea limeade while simultaneously watching the Marvelverse and creating essays in my mind on what drives me stupid crazy about it, I give you the things that have filled up my "vspot" bookmark folder for the past few weeks.

Penny Dreadful Season 2 Trailer

... and it's absolutely beautiful! John Logan's love letter to the depths and dark places of the human condition and the struggle to be authentic is just as Gothic and beautiful as ever! Maybe even more so as Eva Green goes deeper into herself with those stunning Bitsie Tulloch-like cheekbones. But after season 1 being so spottish I am both excited (mostly the gift of visual editing does that to this girl) and worried that Logan's strange plot devices might blow up like it had prior. But this immersing show for the senses does not disappoint with Helen McCrory's "An Unquiet Grave" playing in the background until you realize... holy shit! ... it's Madame Kali having an Elizabeth Bathory-esque bath. 

In Season 2, at least from first glance, Logan's "League of Literary Gentlemen" seem to break up, Ethan Chandler starts to realize the repercussions and comes to grips with his blublad -- sorry, wrong show -- werewolf ways, Dorian Gray (Reeves) pines for Eva Green who seems to go on sabbatical to a more colorful but equally desolate landscape. Caliban feels human touch, Chandler cleanses the "LLG" headquarters, and the Bride of Caliban experiment works (of course). 

Season 2 looks like it will be shaping up to be a wonderful feast for Victorian old souls of this world. But it's my hope as both a serious writer and obviously a little of a Victorian old soul in myself hopes for an overall arc that will not stop dead in its tracks like season one. Plus, the use of Danny Sampani (Sembene) as Murray's faithful servant in the trailer gives me hope that maybe it won't entirely be the "Eva Green Show" but "Penny Dreadful" can go so many different directions. I only ask, Logan, bring me on as a script writer!! Pretty please?

Because a "Backstreet's Back" Reference is Just too Easy... 

I am so excited for this, you have no idea! Basically documenting the time five best friends and brothers (oh, how many times have we read that in the thank you notes!) moved into a house in London, where they composed and recorded their newest album "In a World Like This." Like all reality shows that show multiple personalities living under one roof without their families or wives, magic happens, music is made, friendships solidify harder but not without a little drama. This is where I cue the trailer where Nick blows up, "I'm not afraid of you anymore." Online commenters speculate that might be directed towards my Backstreet Boy, the strong and silent Kevin Richardson.   STWYMO will be full of the Backstreet history of boy band-dom (whether or not it will be intertwined with the modern day is anyone's guess), the fantastic songs that came off the latest album, including "In a World Like This," "Madeline" and the title song, and basically exhibiting the question asked in the trailer, "What do you do when you're a full grown man in a boy band?" Promoting 2 songs on Australia's The Children's Hospital Telethon, this is one of the rarest moments to see the band in live form with less crappy audio. I so approve this it hurts! I had a conversation with a friend a few weeks ago that while she seemed to be more of a violin personality, I seem to be more of the cello although I do love the violin. As the list of my favorite cellists grows, Linnea Olsson is my current cello-girl-crush at the moment. Literally just today, this quirky performer posted a fleeting but beautiful performance on Sweden's Top of the Pops-esque "P3 Guild." The performance only runs until 2:15. 

For those of you already opposing my post who are not familiar with my blog, I love snow! I love the beginning of winter where you get those special Lorelai Gilmore shivers of wintery excitement, complete with the rights to make popcorn and hot chocolate, maybe bake some cookies and watch movies feeling the snow raging outside. Turner Classic and Disney Gave Me the Biggest Yule Present Possible... 

Ah December 21st, my holiday. All Christmassy like traditions have been given an en route to Yule instead of the 25th, so what could be better than an endless string of Christmas movies on Turner Classic that Sunday (Christmas in Connecticut, Holiday Affair..)? Oh, I don't know, stuff from the Disney vault perhaps?

Disney. The infamous vault. Late last month Turner Classic and the Walt Disney Company locked a deal together. TCM would help spruce and change up The Great Movie Ride  at Disney World if the Walt Disney Company would share some of the good stuff from the film vault, including ABC TV series like "Disneyland" or the classic "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" among many other magical and even Christmasssy treats. The other magical part of all of this? This series block will be will be offered "roughly four to five times a year" according to Turner Classic Movies's Senior Vice President for Programming and Production, Charlie Tabesh.

What could be better than this line-up? Oh, I don't know, Ingrid Bergman's beautiful and talented daughter, Isabella Rosselini performing her Green Porno on stage? What a Load of Craft's art festival being revived after a year of retirement? I'm already pretty excited, but then Mission Creek Festival is an amazing time of the year. Remember, this is only round one...

I admit, I have a dream list of my favorite singers who I would kill to put out a Christmas song (if not an album) which includes Annie, The old line up of The Pipettes, All Angels, Charlotte Church 2.0, Charlotte Martin, Emily Wells, Hey Geronimo, Jamie Cullum, Le Kid, Lake Street Dive... the list goes on and on. But never would I have thought that Monica Birkenes would ever put out a Christmas song! Last night a happy gasp ran through my throat seeing this in my facebook feed and immediately hearing that Phil Spector-inspired bass beat, I immediately nerded out. Like what I wrote on a comment on the link, it's everything that I love: An original Christmas song, that retro sound and naturally, Monica herself. I already want to make up a Pipettes-like choreography and learn every lyric! 

Nothing is Better than Darren Criss Singing Disney Songs

It really is no surprise to anyone who knows me that I have the biggest lady wood for Darren Criss, Blaine Anderson, Harry Potter, whatever you want to call him. But Sunday night on ABC, he will be "that guy from Glee that's singing that one song that got cut from Aladdin" for the network special "Backstage with Disney on Broadway: Celebrating 20 Years." Anyone who is a Disney nerd knows that "Proud of Your Boy" was cut from Aladdin but found life in the musical. However, anyone who is a Disney nerd and spends too much time watching documentaries knows that it's impossible not to cry when listening to this knowing the story behind the song of our great Demi-God Howard Ashman and his wanting acceptance from his mother. It's a beautiful, heartbreaking song and Criss pares it down with a simple voice and guitar which is enough to turn me into a crying mess and a puddle simultaneously.

Yes, I know that drivers hate snow with a rough abandon; but if you live in Iowa, you have to expect that. At this very moment, the weather is saying -20 degrees and lower with 1 to 2 inches of snow and crazy wind chill until tomorrow noon. And you know what I say? Bring it. The idea of Christmas, to me, always involves snow and I'm depressed when we have snowless winters... what's the point? You may call me nuts for this, but as Icona Pop wisely sang, "I don't care... Yes yes, this little adapted author is finally getting some screen time through an adaptation of his "Therese Raquin" and Elizabeth Olsen, my homegirl, is playing the typical Zolan anti-heroine stuck in a loveless marriage (to Tom Felton of all people!). She starts cheating on her arranged cousin-husband with Oscar Isaac's Laurent LeClaire and although under the influence of a domineering mother in law (The immortal Jessica Lange), Therese tries to claim her independence. I have a feeling someone is going to die in this movie.... And Matt Lucas (Community, Little Britain, Les Miserables: the 25th Anniversary Concert) is in it toooo!!!!!!!! I definitely have to give Charlie Stratton credit for going with originality. Ten points to Griffyndor?

Yeah, so it's kind of snowing a little earlier than usual, so what? When I was a young 'un I had to wear my fairy godmother Halloween costume over a snowsuit, so things always can be worse. While I was hoping for that "Oh my God it's December and it's special Christmas snow" when I saw snow this year, you know, I think I can live.

Jamie Cullum always nails every cover he does whether it's making a shoe-shuffling version of "Singin' in the Rain" to a magically epic "Lover, You Should Have Come Over" or my personal favorite "High and Dry". Essentially, this man cannot suck and I love every bit of that moppish hair and boyish grin of his. Especially with that grin of his is singing Taylor Swift. There's nothing more that I can other say other than watch this, you will not regret it.

Speaking of people who simply cannot suck. The Great and Majestic Emma Lee Moss has new music thanks to her recent move to Los Angeles. The move seems almost reported on in her current single, "Swimming Pool" (which features Tom Fleming of Wild Beasts) "I want your sunshine, your tan lines, your blue swimming pool." What was once her quirky and smart anti-folk courtesy of the London scene is now, while still clever, dreamy electropop but then it's only the first single. January cannot come soon enough to hear more of this new sound!

The Prince of Darkness and his Brood are Back!

There was ham-throwing, dogs pooping, Ozzy screaming for Sharon, Kelly pouting, Jack moans lustfully that "the McRib is back" and getting shit for it. Madness is going to ensue on VH1 as of ... well, I hope very soon. While not as crazy as the original show and barely a season The Osbournes will highlight what rock's first reality TV stars have been up to lately, although that might be barely a stretch for people who are obsessed with them. (Kelly having been on "Fashion Police" and recently as a voice-over actress on the Disney show "7D", Sharon doing her thing on "The Talk" and "America's Got Channel" and Jack's documentary career on National Geographic and ITV.) Naturally, I am obsessed with Kelly Osbourne so I, of all people, would know these things. 
But what brought this on? "Ozzy's decided he wants to do another few episodes, about eight, of The Osbournes.... He's said for the three years we did it he was drunk the whole time and he'd like to be sober," said Sharon. Knowing that Kelly wasn't in the greatest state of mind either and now finally finding herself, hell, why not bring them back? Maybe 8 episodes will evolve into more. And who doesn't want to see Jack's adorable little girl, Pearl, being held by her legendary grandfather? I DO!

Horror Icons Help Out Animated Poe Adaptation

Guilermo del Toro, Christopher Lee. Bela Lugosi. Roger Corman. Those names alone alongside Edgar Allan Poe in one sentence would be enough to induce heart palpitations for the literary nerd. But Raul Garcia, master animator on such Disney classic as "Aladdin," "Pocahontas" and "The Lion King" has found a way to animate the immortal macabre tales in an episodic series using different animation styles, much in the spirit of Michel Ocelot. "The Masque of the Red Death" is influenced by Egon Schiele, "The Pit and the Pendulum" by mid 19th century photography etc etc.  You can find the trailer here.
Revived Ripper Street Comes Back Today!

After all of the petitions and begging the BBC to not cancel this amazing series, "Ripper Street" will be gracing computer screens everywhere sometime tonight and I cannot be more excited! In this new season, we should expect some pretty amazing things like Molly from Sherlock (Louise Brealey), Rose finally in a good place, new ventures for Long Susan (Myanna Buring), and hopefully more of Jackson's "lack of propriety." Bring it. I'm so excited, I'm doing a happy dance.

This woman can do anything. Covers of Tori Amos, The White Stripes, Ladytron, 4 Non Blondes, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper. Girl can do everything and anything. So how about "The Muppet Show" theme? Sure! Why not? 

Between coffee-tasting and tea-tasting days (there's a difference!), I have been putting my creative writing on a higher priority so between the new playlist and that Hocus Pocus piece, the blog juices are a-flowing and the V-Spot folder in my bookmarks is full of things that are pretty amazing. I repeat, amazing.

"Penny Dreadful" is Bleeding

And honestly, I can't wait! "Penny Dreadful" is a feast for the Victorian-loving senses (and you can quote me on that!). While I can honestly say that the first season's storyline being all knitted and tied up too quickly is the possible downfall of John Logan's series despite the amazing acting from Eva Green, Harry Treadway and Josh Hartnett. But one season is one season, a way for Showtime to know what they have. But let's just hope that Logan will be able to embellish and, like a good Victorian novel, spend pages and pages describing this beautiful sense of longing with these Gothic characters. For now, let's enjoy a promo because "the past [might] return." Bring it! I'm ready!

Say Goodbye to Mr. Mickey Rooney  in the latest adaptation of "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"

With two well accolighted veteran actors in Margaret O'Brien and the late Mickey Rooney, B. Luciano Barsuglia's adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson story looks pretty good to me. Add the 12th Doctor's distant cousin, actor Gianni Capaldi playing Mr. Hyde and we certainly have a strange production coming our way. Toss into the weird salad two actors playing the normally dual role, Mickey Rooney not dressed in Victorian attire, and the trailer still feeling somewhat ambiguous, damn it, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT THIS IS! Tell me what magical insanity this is! Please? Let's Take a Moment to Remind Ourselves Sean Lennon is Awesome-r Than the Rest of Us I literally have no words to explain how awesome this is. So let us take these magical four minutes to take in this man's brilliant words. Amen. Blessed Be. And Another Reason Why Donkeyboy  is My "Hero" ... and not in a Bette Midler Kind of Way ...

There is absolutely no lie when I say that Donkeyboy is amazing and have the inability to suck, because Cato Sundberg is amazing with everything he composes. While he can't take the whole credit for this new song "Hero" as this was the first 100 % Donkeyboy-produced and written song with the exception of a few lyrics thrown in by Canadian songstress Kiesza (who also helped out on "Triggerfinger"). But damn it, this is just good and Scandipop is right that you start singing along midway through. I'm starting to lose the words of how good these guys are. Just, damn it! Check out the boys performing the new hit on NRK TV!
Ages and Ages NEW VIDEO!

Remember that band that I mentioned once that their music could help change the world? Yeah, they took that opening song from the album and made it into a beautiful video. Despite the fact they dumped the driving introduction that absolutely rocks my socks off, the video is full of the intricate work of instruments and voices shot-by-shot. And that's amazing. So I must share this because every time someone plays Ages and Ages, humanity receives more hope. I really hope I'm right about that. Oh, and Tim Perry talks to his cat.

Conan O'Brien Holds George Harrison Week and It Was...

...Lukewarm. I'm sorry, it was totally lukewarm with some pretty dynamic moments. I have always loved Mr. O'Brien and everything he associates himself with (that epic throw-down three-way between him, John Stewart and Stephen Colbert? Uh, yeah.). With the advent of Harrison's reissued "The Apple Years: 1968-1975," the O'Brien bandwagon leapt to showcase many artists throughout the week playing in the former Beatle's honor. And it was... yeah, it was very lukewarm. Beck kicked off the week with a classic from "All Things Must Pass" which came across well-played but with not much vocal strength. Tuesday was blessed by Paul Simon covering "Here Comes the Sun" and once more, there was something lacking I just wasn't feeling. The Bob Dylan-esque vocals, perhaps? Harrison's own son came on Wednesday night to serve the world the best night covering not only a rocking yet simultaneously soulful "Let it Down" but also a web exclusive featuring Jon Bates of Big Black Delta giving a folky rendition of "Ballad of Frankie Crisp (Let it Roll)." Norah Jones finished off the week with a pretty not incredibly exciting "Behind the Locked Door".  But that was only the tip of a very cool iceberg as Sunday night was George Fest at the Los Angeles' Fonda Theater, which was just a huge explosion of music, including Brian Wilson, "Weird Al" Yankovic, The Killers, Dhani Harrison, Spoon, Velvet Revolver, "that guy" from The Eurythmics Dave Stewart, Ringo Starr, Kara DioGuardi, Ann Wilson, The Flaming Lips, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club among many others. This magical night was not only a George Harrison "church service," so to speak, but also a benefit for the Jameson Neighborhood Fund which 100 percent of the tickets went to. You can watch a lot of the magic here. But Mr. O'Brien proved his Beatle nerdiness as he covered "Old Black Shoe" both vocally and on guitar. I immediately gave infinity points to Gryffindor. 
And the Honorary V-Spot Award of Life  Goes to... ME GETTING A PICTURE WITH SHARON VAN ETTEN LAST MONDAY! You can see it all on my face, "Dear Goddess, her arm is around me and WHAT THE HELL her head is on my cheek. Keep it together B! *internally screaming*"

Charlotte Church: Live in Cardiff Concert

Words cannot EXPRESS how dorked out I am for the moment that someone uploaded Church's BBC special that highlights many songs from the 4 EP as well as some of the fantastic tracks from 1 including "How Not to be Surprised When You're a Ghost" (which seems to be my theme song on some weird level) and "Nerve." While I am sad that some of my more underrated favorites like "The Rise" (which Church has a remarkable attachment to) and "Lasts, or Eschaton" or even "Magician's Assistant" isn't on here, I am more than happy that all 39 minutes are uploaded. So how's about a DVD with more songs or is this all that we have? Oh hell, I'd be happy with a DVD with a lot of interviews.

Tatiana Maslany Continues to be Utterly Awesome

She plays a pill-popping, gun toting house wife, a Ukranian terrorist, a female-lovin' scientist, and even more clones to boot on "Orphan Black" so what else could Tatiana Maslany possibly do to one-up her awesomeness? Possibly having a "Shaun of the Dead" inspired photo shoot for Comic Con including an interview for The Hollywood Reporter .  Can she seriously be any more amazing? Stars Unleash "From the Night" 

At this point, my love for Canadian Indie-Rock band Stars is pretty apparent as fall approaches, their wonderfully moody and ambient music is like an Autumn lullaby to my ears as the Sun God begins to die. But Torquil Campbell, Amy Millan, Evan Cranley, Chris Segliman, and Pat McGee always has had a degree of unexpectedness in their wide genre-spanning music. What was once lyric-conscious rock turned to occasional pop with the occasional symphonic sound and now... disco? "From the Night" is a letter to those of you who stayed home and didn't take a chance on the possibility that a bassline and a hi-hat rhythm might save your life," thus spoke Stars mastermind, Torquil Campbell to NPR, "We just wanted you all to know that it's beautiful out here; that everyone feels like time won't end and we will all be alive forever. Oh, and one other thing: it's lonely. There is no lonelier feeling in the world than watching the sun rise as you walk home. Go back to sleep. And dream..."  I just fucking love this band so much! No genre is too obscure for them! But apparently "No One is Lost" is going to be one huge dance party and it will be landing October 14th which cannot get here fast enough!  Le Kid Doesn't Dance and Makes it Sound Danceable

I suppose there was one more song deep within the small discography of ABBA's modern electropop cousin, Le Kid, that managed to escape me. And with good reason, since Scandipop themselves explain that Germany is a bitch to get music out of, which leads to only a two minute snippet of a wonderful electronic dance party despite the lyrics. And really, did we expect something less from this fantastic band? Can we please get this released in this hemisphere so that I can have a dance party in my head since obviously, this girl doesn't dance (in public anyway).  Sharon van Etten is Touring Her Way Back to Me *happydance happydance happydance*
Again, I can't lie that Sharon van Etten is seriously my home girl. I know there's not much chance of chasing her down the moment she gets off the stage like last time, but, I will be mentally hugging her the whole time as she is coming back to Iowa City October 13 as she begins her "Are We There" tour. 

Between Jazz Fest and Arts Fest lies a very boring and unfortunately workless month for me. Thank God for the internet and pop culture. What would I be without you?

So when Sharon wanders around Refinery29's office with an omnicord to result in this performance, you better fucking listen! And I did, melted while all the while staring at this strange and magical instrument that is the omnicord. I'm in love but when am I not?

50 Years Later...

 

 

Some of my earliest memories involve getting The Beatles's first movie from the movie store (remember those?) and watching it on constant repeat. My brother would memorize visually and audial every move Ringo Starr made on the drums and I was somehow enthralled in the songs that were not the headliners like "Can't Buy Me Love" and the title track. Well, this strange little movie has a Criterion reincarnation come June 24th including 4K digital restoration and dozens of documentaries and features that would make the unofficial film historian in me do happy dance laps around my apartment.

 

Let's not just stop there, the first Beatles flick is also coming to theaters in July! I'm seriously not kidding. Des Moines or Chicago, I am coming for you! I have to! I mean it! Seriously! *pouts* I'm not, am I?
