Lately all I can do for these lists is to title what sweet I'm eating at the exact moment so while I'm in the high of a vegan chocolate cupcake with peanut butter icing, this is what I have to offer the world -- but no, you may not have my cupcake! Mine!
Secret Life of Walter Mitty Ben Stiller Style
We all read it in high school, disillusioned man goes completely Tom Ewell in Seven Year Itch in his daydreams but instead of stress-inducing anxiety (Since Seven Year Itch was a huge headache when Marilyn wasn't in the scene) we have WW2 delusions where Mitty is the hero instead of a victim (hmm, Wilder may have been influenced by this short story...) but why tamper with Danny Kaye's performance in the 40s film version? Because this is Hollywood, and Hollywood likes to fuck up good adaptations case in point, the latest news as of early this month with Ben Stiller possibly playing Mitty. In a modern world, the movie would be degraded into every other movie Stiller has played as a loser-incarnate. (You do realize his two shining moments was The Royal Tennanbaums and Heavyweights? I love that movie...) so why mess with it? Ugh!
While we're on the topic of movies based around WW2, I have a good question I always ask: what would have happened if Germany was still the top grossing movie nation like it used to be in the 20s without WW2 happening... would Germany be the Hollywood of today and mainstream movies wouldn't suck? Food for thought...
Get To Know Their Face
Dwindling in my Vspot Bookmark folder for so many weeks I cannot remember the source of the blog or the magazine, but someone in this world posted their soundcloud to which I support this with my face melted in a total Le Kid kind of way. This is pop music at its finest with some pretty gorgeous British women -- a fair trade.
"Turn Me On Dammit"
From beautiful British women to my favorite female ethnicity... country... whatever you want to call it, Norway has god a whole lot more sexual and we all know I'm approving this with mouth agape and eyes bulging with happiness. Thank you, Nylon Magazine! In an article that features the lead of Helene Bergsholm as Alma, a hormonal 15 year old living vicariously in her fantasies in school and at her part time job while in that high school hope "the cute boy," Artur (Mathias [Mah-tea-es] Myren) will notice. Oh he will notice her, and while the results are sad, this is the grittiest we will ever see adolescence outside of the U.S. that doesn't involve bullying. I haven't even seen a trailer but already my heart has this movie as a special place and NOT because of hot Norwegian girls masturbating (although it's a perk!) but because after watching Sweden's "Show Me Love" it's an indication that the Scandinavians know how to film adolescence in their movies instead of sticking to the similar plot and stereotypes in Hollywood teenage chick flicks.
Uma Thurman joins Smash!!
For the third Vspot list in a row, Smash truly has a wonderful place in my heart despite cashing in on some of the mythical Marilyn versus the Marilyn I see in my mind, although I call her Norma Jeane. (If you want to watch a great Marilyn with dramatic potential movie, watch Don't Bother to Knock, your mind shall be blown into kibble!) But moving on from her and into the TV show that pays wonderful homage to her, there's another blond in town. Proving she has the dancing and singing chops in the musical movie version of "The Producers" Uma Thurman is coming to Smash as a star who dabbles with the thought of playing Marilyn. A little old for the Smash-version of Marilyn? Maybe. But this makes it harder to decide who should win the role, McPhee or Hilty. Don't ask me to choose!
Alphabeat Does Vacation
What's better than Danish pop band Alphabeat's song "Fascination" where they totally pull a Tom Green "say the word" in their bridge? A comeback, and a comeback that's so perfect with a single that sounds like it will be in summer commercials all over America if Alphabeat plays their cards right. Oddly and wonderfully put out on the first day of Spring Break, this is this spring/summer's anthem! Watch them sing this magic on the finale of Denmark's X Factor then Lil Anders duets with finalist Line on their huge hit, The Spell. Have I mentioned this performance includes women dancers as sexy flight attendances? Um, yeah.
Karen Walker Insect Dress
THIIIISSS!!!
Once more... thank you Nylon!
Romeo and Juliet Goes Buckley
One of my best film crews next to Tim Burton's entourage thought they could top Romeo and Juliet as a guys with shaved heads and 90s punk rock and Radiohead rifts with William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet . Well I almost feel guilty to say that, Luhrmann, Bilcock (my favorite editor ON THIS EARTH!) be very careful because someone is taking over the Shakespeare tragedy on Broadway. Luhrmann loves his broadway so this may injure his theatrical little heart.
"The Last Goodbye" is a musical treatment with Jeff Buckley tunes has been going on for two years now, but just recently cited in Nylon Magazine as Kristen Connolly's (Mona Lisa Smile) latest acting gig before starting on Joss Whedon's "The Cabin" which is also on my must-watch list. How did I not know about this and why didn't someone tell me about this 2 years ago? Off to youtube I go for clips..
I have a different attitude on Spring Break than others -- I live in an ultimate Bohemian paradise, why would I ever leave even when I still was in college? So, I make two rules since graduating three years ago (three years? damn) on proper Iowa City Spring Break etiquette
1. Talk to EVERYONE you can on random silly comments. (Because people, whether behind the cash register or that cute girl in the sundress and motorcycle boots hanging out at the coffee house -- ahem, not talking from experience -- are just naturally nicer than any other week in the year.
2. Ladies, take advantage of the great weather and wear only skirts, dresses and leggings for the week, it'll amp up your attitude a little more.
So in light of these two rules, or more rule number 2, this is what I did my spring break, or rather the highlights, or the highlights surrounding spring break (and mind you, I have a love-hate relationship with spring because I get hot really easily so I either have to wear less layers or more layers depending on the weather and spring is a difficult little bastard like that.)

While a little nippy for this adorable dark blue and light purple polka dots (obscure colors for polka dots), I found this lovely little shirt-dress, or maybe a mini-night gown for $8.50 at Ragstock on the "Modern Dress" rack (my new God). While it's probably not spring material I did wear an awkward open long sleeve cardigan (the ones that are asymmetrical at the bottom) tucked it in and went around feeling the wind through my bra, but my cleavage never looked better than that night meeting a bunch of my guy friends's friends via Applebees and bowling all the while explaining Don Marquis's comics and poems collection "Archy and Mehitabel." (I am a geek, profoundly.)

This is the dress that's made famous by Trendy Spring Commandments # 1, there is nothing wrong with finding a dress and building a whole outfit on it just to wear the first day of Spring Break, and unleashing all your upperback tattoos. While the waist hits me at just the right spots, clearly this dress was made for a bustier girl (case in point, finding it at Ragstock on the "Modern Dress" rack as well for 8.50) then running into said bustier girl who was wearing the dress the same day as you!! (awkward). Needless with my super-round shoulders this dress is a mix of fail and win. The win? THE BOOTS! Oh Sweet Baby Buddha the BOOTS! These bad boys are from Lorenz 2.0 (a great local shoe store that always has great sales, great for off-season shoes) and at the cheapest of their fashion boots at 25 dollars. After having to break them in for a few days earning a really narly scratch on my heel it was sooo worth it. Now they don't hurt anymore and they look amazing with all these dresses on this post!

I wouldn't wear the polka dot "night shirt" without a belt because the pattern is so tiny it would otherwise look lifeless on me, but when you have colored jeans, it can be used to your advantage -- in pure 40s style. And that I did with this, my $12 red jeans, rolled up and slightly cuffed with black sandals to look so completely pin-up girl inspired, right along with bright-red lips, pig tails with my Juno "Puppy-Dog ears" layer of hair falling to the sides of my face and the most important part to this outfit -- the perfect cat eye. This may or may not have resulted in many Marilyn Monroe inspired pictures with her facial expressions -- like you've never done it in the privacy of your... vanity...
| Friday, March 23rd |
And of course, the "Obligatory Floral Print Dress" which every fashionister should have in her closet this spring/summer, and one that flatters her as well as doesn't overpower any of the curves, which is so important to look pattern placement. BE PICKY! And I was completely picky with this 16 dollar dress, pulling Trendy Spring Commandment # 1 again with the buying of a white cardigan to put over this when Spring has her period and gets a little nipply. But either way, even I cannot stop staring at the picture of this dress -- I could make a list of all it's magical attributes (and this wasn't the dress I was looking for!)
- Blue and pink - I hardly ever wear either color! (Looks up at skirt, well, sometimes...) But my ideal pink always has a tint of brown in it because dirty pink looks so good with my skin tone Blue though? I have a strange relationship with the color blue, I used to love it in high school but now I reserve it for accessories in more green-tinted shades (the necklace in the above picture and the blue manicure I have right now) to really show off its blue-ness. I like my blues to pop out, and the blue flowers on this dress is no exception.
- The formation of the dress in general is too perfect for my body, there's just a little tightness in the outward seam in the shoulder that hangs over my tiny-as-hell arms but I forgive that BUT THE BEST PART is what you can barely see on the left portion of the dress, the oh-so tiny pleats that start from the idea waistline for me (right under the breast, if you're reading and attribute your body size to mine, this is your ideal dress shape) but after staring at the dress for awhile there is even tiny ruffled pleat around the waistline of this thing that helps lift up the boobs and accentuate the hips.
- This is the dress I want to style my hair in pin curls into and go completely Mad Men inspired. But unfortunately some of us are blessed with very flat thin hair that hates all product if it isn't Got2B or anything for thin hair, yet a girl can dream...
Because I both love dresses and women, so the Academy Awards is basically a huge drool-fest for me, myself, and my twitter feed which I hope many of you enjoyed. So who were my favorites of the night? And in no particular order...
Bridesmaids' Wendi McLendon-Covey in a perfect, pale, could-be prom dress but it ends up looking like a fabulous (as much as I hate that adjective) in a pale and silver Simin Couture and Simon G. jewels.
Bridesmaids' costar Maya Rudolph looks her best in my favorite shade of a wine-colored purple Johanna Johnson dress and Neil Lane jewels to counter the dark color. Did I mention I seriously love this color?
Shiny, looking like tinfoil but this is so well sculpted to her curvy body, Stacy Keibler (or the future Mrs. George Clooney) looks perfect in a slight mermaid-style Golden Marchesa gown.
We all know how I adore Kelly Osbourne and I cannot go a Friday without watching her so seeing her cracking up so hard at the end of the Red Carpet coverage over Ryan Seacrest getting "pancake-bombed" by The Dictator (Sasha Baron-Coen) in a Badgley Mischka beaded dress that makes her body more magical than usual I was resting my head on a table laughing hard too!
Giuliana Rancic looked strangely radiant and I couldn't tell whether it was her fantastic makeup or having her hair up or maybe it's just the confidence exuding off of this beaded Tony Ward gown. This is probably my favorite neckline of the night though, that shape does magic for women.
Sometimes it's how a woman wears the dress versus how it looks on her body that makes a dress legendary at the Oscars. Case in point, Tina Fey in a black Carolina Herrera which gives her volume in the right places -- the volume around the waist gives a great hourglass shape from the breast to the waist and that is OK with me... I say that as I pervily grin.
So what if Emma Stone is inspired by Nicole Kidman's 2007 Balenciaga and most of the sites think she's a worst dress? I like this fuschia-red Jean Baptiste Valey dress although I would suggest tying or downgrading the bow by an inch; it's not our fault that Nicole Kidman has a giraffe neck.
I didn't see Gwyneth Paltrow's white-white Calvin Klein dress and and cape right away but after our fashion panel which included Modern Family's fashionista Sarah Hyland pointed her out, I was bowled over by the perfect sharp angular lines, the straightness of the cape made the neckline angles look extremely clean and so oddly Swedish-Ikea like... how can you not love this?
Let's pull away from the fact I do not like Angelina Jolie (paraphrasing from a short interview she did on the red carpet: I don't let my children watch these things, they don't really know what Mummy and Daddy do. Oh shut up, that's restricting no matter what good interest there is in that) and look at this amazing dress. She purposefully posed on stage so everyone could over-enjoy the slit, but what I enjoyed out of this black Versace gown was the crazy details -- blow this picture up and look at the folds in the dress, is it velvet? It looks like and if not, that's some crazy folding work. But who would find anything less in Versace?
I'm so happy that polka dots can make an odd quirky appearance but on the person I least expected it on. Despite the strange hem line about the waist and not entirely fitted around the waist, I actually do really love this dress without the necklace. Polka dots are a huge statement. Kelly Osbourne, I'm speaking directly to you with a request to wear polka dots next year. I would love to see Christian Siriano play with polka dots and Kelly in said dress. Make this a reality!!
Sorry this took so long, but life butts into the blogosphere and while SOPA exists, I'm daring myself in even doing this Vspot, but it's been three days coming. Back to lightheartedness, since Golden Globes are always so touch and go, I thought it would be fun to put up a Vspot list in honor of the award show that had a musical number, the Hatha Madonna, and a subdued British bastard.
Emma Stone Abuses My Favorite Colors and Kills It
I'm never one to solidly be for the fashion, but since March 2010 when I started this confounded blog (I say with love) I find myself focusing on the dresses this award season -- and if its a beautiful dark wine purple, damn it, I will comment on it!!!
Emma Stone, brought to you by the folks from justjared (*smiles robotically at Congress*), wears my number one favorite look of the night wearing a tulle dark plum and fuscia Lanvin aka. my future wedding dress... without the eagle belt and the lacy cap sleeves.
According to Kelly Osbourne on Fashion Police, if I may paraphrase, said that a lot of the pictures don't do the color justice, that much of it made it look like a "blood clot" as Joan Rivers jokes but I'm in love with the coloring technique, as the stripes on the side is actually this year's biggest trend, showing everyone's body type at their best with the light colors creating your shape as it should, and mostly made for the curvaceous. Like I said, future wedding dress.
Careful Glee, Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy Are Better Than You!
This doesn't even need an introduction or my criticism. Seriously.
Revolutionary War Globes; Madonna vs. Gervais
Although at this rate, Madonna is only British in voice. As someone with musical .. training ... ahem (I was musically trained on Disney like every other choir member from the late 80s/early 90s). But I digress. But we all know what happened, Madonna won the Best Song Award for "Masterpiece" for her self-directed movie W.E. which is the B storyline from The King's Speech. What happened next is just a piece from the canon of what I consider funny -- abrupt physical comedy.
The real-British person out of the two won -- and Elton John cried like a baby.
The Artist Half-Sweeps
"This seals Dujardin going to the Oscars or shall we call them Oskars this year? Yay The Artist!!" I screamed on the twitter feed in absolute happiness. Despite the fact that Djuardin has been struggling to learn English in the past three weeks, or rather perfecting it because (well d'uh) they are going to the Oscars.
How can I love this movie the way I do and not having seen it? Well, because as a devoted cinephile who believes film should always include a little old school (I just read that The Dark Knight will have a little Fitz Lang in it) attached to it. And the fact the movie has got fantastic reception, plus a win for Dujardin, Best Comedy or Musical, and Bource for the Musical Score (suck that Kim Novak). What The Artist actually does, making its appearance in the Oscars will show that maybe what the college-level film historians consider uncool now (German and French film is now considered blase and all Asian film is praised higher than any other international film) is back in vogue.
How Much I Won in the Golden Globe Pool
If every biased prediction I made in December 19th's Warm and Fuzzy Vspot cost me five bucks, I would have won twenty five bucks getting Best Actress (Meryl Streep for "Iron Lady"), Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Plummer for "Beginners"), Best Comedy/Musical, Best Actor in Comedy/Musical, Best Supporting Actress in Television and Best Director (Marty for "Hugo, cinephiles are allowed to only call him Marty at this point.). Where's my money?
Second Place for Best Dressed
At first glance, Nominee Charlize Theron looks like a boring pale mess in this faint blush Dior number but the more you stare at, the more it looks almost punkish. Call me insane, but after Emma Stone, she's runner up for Best Dressed of the night.
Assisted with Cartier jewelry, the super-amazing headband that makes me wish my hair was in its long state so I could steal that headband and wear it just as good, and those Givenchy shoes which are more hard against this pixie-like dress, hence making it look very punk. Oh Charlize, I think I have fallen in love with you after seeing you rock out to The Gossip in the Dior commercial.
Cecile B. DeMille Award Makes Me Hot
Best tweet of the night "i love to take a bath in a casket... I think I just got a female boner. Morgan Feeman" and forgetting how sensuous Sidney Poiter's slow speaking voice really is (hot damn), the Cecile B. DeMille award last night was poignant, moving, adorable/adorkable, and sexual done by three geniuses, including Helen Mirren who wished to play a penguin in Freeman's narrated film "March of the Penguins." After being the narrator of Glee's Becky Jackson's internal mind, Mirren could get away with being a penguin. While there were tears of gratefulness for one of our greatest actors, this clip from The Electric Company got more hits than Lady Gaga's Bad Romance. Better him than her, I think.
I like my British Men Rude
Hugh Grant, misinterpreted Colin Firth (rawr, wait that's just sexy), the few times Jack Davenport got "douchey" (as much as I hate that word) on Coupling and Ricky Gervais. I like my British men rude and a little crazy. so honestly, if Gervais had to subdue himself to appease the oversensitive Hollywood Foriegn Press, or Hollywood in general, then he did what he sought out to do.
- The physical comedy with Madonna, hysterical (although Elton John's face of "Bitch please" also solidified the moment).
- "They actually gave me a list of rules. I'm going to ignore them, but I thought it would be good to read them out. This is real, ok? No profanity. That's fine. I've got a huge vocabulary. No nudity. See, that's a shame. Because I've got a huge ... vocabulary. But a tiny penis. No, no. Doesn't matter. It works. Don't worry about it. It's fine." (Self-beration is funny, Hollywood)
- "What's with all the divorces? What's going on? Arnold and Maria, J-Lo and Mark Anthony, Ashton and Demi. Kim Kardashian and some guy no one will remember. He wasn't around long. Seventy-two days. A marriage that lasted 72 days. I've sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches." (Because James Cameron is an egomaniac)
- "[Boardwalk Empire is] about a load of immigrants who came to America about a 100 years ago and they got involved in bribery and corruption and worked their way up into high society. But enough about the Hollywood Foreign Press ... They do a lot of charity work and they’re a nonprofit organization -- just like NBC." (because it's OK to pick on the channel it's on, just not the other channels)
But it's not for any of us to defend his jokes, he had good moments just sometimes rudeness has a piece of truth in it. So please Hollywood, if you dislike Gervais so much and force him to go to Entertainment Weekly and have to write one huge defense article picking apart every joke of his for Hollywood to understand -- what is he doing? Hire someone else if you don't fucking like it. I, just happen to like it 'cos I have a lot of British friends. <end of rant>
PUPPEH!!!
Because this is the best moment to end on.
Seriously. Uggie, thou'rt adorable beyond words and words!
Dear Zooey Deschanel Dress I just Bought Today,
I have looked at you on the rack at Revival over many many months - I thought you looked over-sized for my new figure, the color a little off for my skin tone, and too thin looking being just an overlay. But I have honored the detailing of your retro button trim and bow tie which I do promise I will learn how to tie more effectively without looking lop-sided. On the upside, I'm happy I brought you home with me like a good puppy and that the girl at the register was happy it was finally getting sold - in a good way. I knew you were worth it although I could have bought an accessory building t-shirt dress but as a primary rule of shopping at Revival, one should focus on statement pieces. So really, you were the better option. wizard. You will be the first outfit I publicly hula hoop in. I shall wear you to work on Monday, I don't care of the dress code. I'm yours.
Dear Amazing Biker Boots from Lorenz's
You were the most unexpected surprise, the only shoes that were close to good enough for my horribly disformed feet. I have always wanted biker boots... I have watched "Daria" far too much to know that you can do multiple things with biker boots, especially transforming everything somewhere between masculine and feminine. I have been waiting forever for you. But your "sister" the tan ankle boots are still waiting for me, your supervisor still has them on hold so hopefully you will see her very soon.
I'm yours.
Dear Neck-Tie earrings from Ragstock,
I have no words. NO. WORDS. Oh my Blog.
I'm yours.
