Donkeyboy's Back with some Sexy...back.

You know you're the coolest band in Norway when you get to number 2 on the charts just a few hours *after* it's release. And that's what Triggerfinger, with the assistance of Canadian songstress Kiesza, did for Donkeyboy. It's no lie this song is Donkeyboy is getting their sexyback where "Ambtiions" was Europop goodness, "Silver Moon" was synth-y and dance club-ready. If this single is any indication of what's to come on their next album, let's all hope for some synth-y sexy bedroom R&B.

Binge-Watchable TV: Sundays and Suspense

Not Netflix, not Hulu; I like to kick my binge-watching slightly old school. Rhyme unintended, really. But with Fall comes the most binge-able season of the year for the classic movie junkie: October's Turner Classic Horror Marathon. But this month is almost like a warm Fridays in October. Ever wanted to watch every single movie Hitchcock ever made including some of his silents and exports from England? Spend Sunays with Hitch. I am and I'm not apologizing for it. Hashtag: better than Twilight.

Margaret Berger knows how to make us dance and happy; but lately with the symphonic electropop that also includes her Eurovision entry "I Feed You My Love" you have to wonder if she forgot to take her anti-depressants. Armed with the same songwriters from the unfortunate 6th runner up song, there's something curious about "Human Race" that would probably make someone not want to like it right away but much like Lady Gaga's "Applause" it would take a few listens to really fall in love with it. And who doesn't love a Margaret Berger song? Berger's album "Chastisement" is rumoured to come out sometime in November!!!!!

Sleigh Bells Sex it Up

After splintering my face off live last year; Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller clearly weren't done with blowing people's minds with loud noise pop. "Bitter Rivals" as their first single to the same titled album comes out October 8 with the Sleigh Bells experiments they like to do. First with experimenting in "Reign of Terror" with drums, "Bitter Rivals" will be more focused on melody. And if the single is any indicator of the album, I'm definitely interested in seeing how many times a day I have to listen to a song to like it. But I'm a loyal fan and will hope to hear more once October rolls around and watch Alexis get sexy in a boxing outfit in the new video until then. And that kid with the glasses is my new favorite person.

Britpop's New Pixie: Chloe Howl

Lilly Allen is all about the quirk; Kate Nash is all about making you feel like a '90s Riot Grrl in a retro dress but Chloe Howl makes you feel human. Personally for me she does that and then stuns me with her beautiful pixie-ness.... and her freckles. But enough of me girl-crushing all over her. The "Rumour" songstress has a new song under her belt and its seething with intelligent Britpop with a touch of synth. "How Proud" sounds very different from the pop-tarty "Rumour," with polished snythpop and the attacking lyrics "So don't bother showing me those lines that are tattooed on your lips/I know you're on the clock for sure, I know the way you tick."

Regardless of my theories on the concept of marriage; it's great for those who want it (and I know a very deserving lady couple who will be married soon and I hope they find a song on here that they will enjoy ... aaand maybe play at their reception? =] ) who are lucky enough to find their someone. But it's clear to me I'm meant for a "lesbian handfasting"... are those legal? #curiouserandcuriouser

It's About Time Dressy Bessy!

What's bright technicolor with sunglasses, bitching guitars and a babydoll dress singing about Alice in Wonderland? Um, no one but Tammy Ealom, lead singer of Dressy Bessy, who just this past week released Summer Singles Volume 1 (Radio) featuring acoustic and perky sounds of "Hey Alice!" and "Little Pieces" as well as a video for the prior song. And just so you know, "Hey Alice" has gone into my summer music canon.

Fans rejoiced and some major reviewing magazines scrunched up their noses in a "really?" as if Spektor didn't have enough B sides so the aptly named "What We Saw from the Cheap Seats" is a perfect album. name, although it would have been well-suited for a two disc album filled with her live songs finally produced in the studio as some of my personal favorites "Baby Jesus," "Raindrops," and "Loveology" have never been released in the studio. Spektor, if you're reading this... make this happen! But as for one of the years top 100 albums? Well, judge for yourself at NPR's First Listen.

Whatever Happened to Messina High?

In the home-stretch of post production, Messina High or the "10 Things I Hate About You" of "Much Ado About Nothing," just fancied up their website with what to expect for the look of the film. There are still unknowns in the film which, like I said in the Aural V-Spot Memorial Day Vspot (I swear, sheer coincidence) but I think this is something to look forward to other than their lack of spell check to Buissness from business. But, they got stills! And pictures! But still nothing too specific.

If the Chinese had a special new year for this summer specifically, it would be "The Year of the Summer-Named Musical Duos" while Beach House and Best Coast's new albums "Bloom" and "The Only Place" is blowing indie and college radios into kibble, but Summer Camp already had their gigantic summery album with "Welcome to Cordale" so what more could they possibly do? I have cried and pleaded to the nail polish Gods (and Musings from Manhattan) for a peach nail polish to come to me and through Musings from Manhattan's email to me on their used blog polish sale that looks like it's over with that hope is nearing. Essie Spring 2012 line is going to deliver... hard. MFM continued to send me this link at another blogspot sister Scrangie which shows the latest palate that will be gracing CVS's shelves within the next month. And just happens the first polish reviewed is the peach "A Crewed Interest" which is seriously rocking my clock. Onto peach lipstick...

Pop-Up Local Quirky Stores Are Back in Business in IC

Iowa City isn't just the city of literature, it is the city of fantastic local jewelers/artists/accessory maestros and someone needs to utilize these great artists in stores and not just the scattered one-of-a-kind shops, farmer's markets and Art & Craft (or as I call it, Etsy Fair). But as of this past winter, fellow Osagian Catherine Champion created and opened the Pop-Up store called December which now will be rotated throughout the seasons -- called a different store every season. While I love love love that concept, I just think having a consistent one all year round without getting crazy thematic is good enough for me. Like, making an accessory/art Farmer's Market like store with art pieces displayed like produce. But while concept sounds odd, I'm oddly gearing up for the second project Champion has conjuring up -- with my local obsession known as Revival.

Revival and Champion will be getting together to unleash "Merci" on Iowa City, a "high end consignment shop" according to the Press Citizen article. It caused me to do a happydance all over my living room. Currently, there is a sense of hope in the downtown area of Iowa City because of the "Good Ideas" program that the city just recently put together to get Iowa City back its quirk by 2030, hopefully the quirk will be helped by the artists -- they always come through.

Margaret Berger Collabs With Charlotte Thorstvedt

What's like von Trier's Melancholia, a little Sapphic and all around a Scandinaviangasm of the highest order? Norge Idol 2004 Runner-Up Margaret Berger is starting to show a darker side lately with her heartbroken single "In a Box" and it's B-side clubby "4.E.V.E.R.L.O.V.E" and is starting to bloom into something sexier, she keeps getting better. Arrythmia is the lost Portishead song with Model/DJ Charlotte Thorstvedt who is starting a recording career and this is so promising, I reported to facebook with this link saying I had to wipe off buckets of drool off my couch.

Maggie Smith Continues to Become Immortal

As an official Downton Abbey geek (after 4 episodes), it's hard to believe that anyone could hate Maggie Smith's character The Dowager Countess of Grantham or if Potterheads are watching in grief of the Harry Potter franchise being over.remembering Smith going all Angelina Jolie in the last chapter. Nevertheless Maggie Smith's character is becoming immortal on throw cushions and now Tumblr. When Dowager Countess Texts is probably the best thing to happen to me this week and it just happened to me today. Best one so far?

This is all you need to know about Sleigh Bell's newest video for "Comeback Kid," Alexis Krauss is looking unearthly beautiful as always and Derek Miller flipping a mustard bottle into a grocery cart is just plain epic. These people can make anything look beautifully hipster.

"We come from the land of the ice and snow..." but I'm one of those give-and-take Iowans. I don't mind snow, I really don't! 30 degree fluffy snowfall days are sheer perfection. Living in North Central Iowa where we get the colder and harder snow because we have Canada and the flat Minnesota plains to thank for that weather So living in Southern Iowa for so long (6 years this fall) really isn't that painful, non-Iowan immigrants. So in light of the Viking war cry, I give you the best thing that has happened to me in the past few weeks.

Josh Groban in First CollegeHumor Film

So what would happen if the online company CollegeHumor made a movie that is caffeinated with awesome people like Brad Copeland, the mad genius behind Arrested Development and actors Ben Schwartz from Parks and Recreation and up-and-coming "stop my beating heart" Crazy Stupid Love alum Josh effing Groban got together? "Coffee Town," a Copeland-penned film that will be the coffee house geek's "Cheers" focusing on a group who meets at a coffee house being served by Groban. Two of my favorite things in one, excuse me while I go die of happiness.

God Help the Girl Goes Musical!

More often super-cute than Broadway spectacular, God Help the Girl and Belle and Sebastian Scotsman Stuart Murdoch wants to make a musical and needs YOUR help here at kickstarter.com as he proposes for this summer film to be green-lit.

God Help the Girl, which is also the name of Murdoch's latest musical project, is "set in Glasgow, Scotland, the film is about a girl named Eve who is in the hospital dealing with some emotional problems and starts writing songs as a way of getting better. Songwriting becomes her way forward, leading her to the City where she meets James and Cassie, two musicians each at crossroads of their own." Or so kickstarter says, and 698 people love this idea, as do I, and already have donated 71,388 to this cause. We haven't had a good musical lately and maybe Murdoch will bring some retribution to the dying genre.

Sleigh Bells are Back Ringing Like Amazing

Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller are back, but instead of melting your face with heavy beats and bass, they want to slash your soul with Miller's electric guitar. But that doesn't mean the music doesn't lose momentum. "Born to Lose" which I shared a few weeks ago was a mere precursor to their first official single "Comeback Kid" which truly slashes your soul.

Sharon van Etten Gaining Momentum

Staying on the Stereogum circuit, Sharon van Etten has been grading late night stages on Jimmy Fallon and the back of my BUST Magazine (total unashamed "Hellooo Nurse" moment yesterday at work) which gave her latest "Tramp" high praise. So it seems appropriate for her to check in with stereogum's T. Cole Rachel on the tour (slash Iowa City detour in March), working on Tramp, and maybe a few name drops...

John Cusack Reincarnating E.A. Poe

Knowingly there is a post in this blog somewhere that talked about this movie over the summer where it was called "The Untitled Poe Project" (I looked everywhere! I can't find it!), The Raven has a trailer and is due out March 9th, but is it solid? Probably as solid as other movies in its same genre, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Van Helsing, classic over-campy literature-action films. While I'm ashamed of enjoying these, I have slight hesitation, especially my least favorite actor, John Cusack, making a new reincarnation of the mystery and horror writer and poet. It's anyone's guess -- see it for yourself. I'm at a loss. This could be epic or it could be a huge fail. The poster on the other hand, is made of HUUUUGE win.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Fashion

Despite being under fire recently for being pro-rape through fashion by way of edgy punk style (which found its way into my heart via E! News... surprise surprise), H & M has officially put out a 30 piece collection inspired by Larsson's heroine Lisbeth Salander. Which is exactly why why all feminists would be up in arms, like blogger Natalie Karneef in her Open Letter to H&M from Rape Survivor which she makes good points.

"And now, H&M, you have created a line of clothing based on her character: a woman who has suffered a lifetime of abuse, who is violently raped, and who is hunting down a man who violently rapes and kills other women. Lisbeth has been through hell, and her clothing is her armor. That's her choice, and it's an understandable choice. But you glamorize it, putting a glossy, trendy finish on the face of sexual violence and the rage and fear it leaves behind."

To which H&M says to the Wall Street Journal.

“The collection is based on and inspired by the film and character Lisbeth Salander and though we think Lisbeth is a strong woman who stands up for her ideal, we are not trying to represent her specifically. Our goal is to rather offer a collection that we see in today’s trend picture that will appeal to many customers.”

I love these clothes, it's hard and tough and should have no bearing on the character. If anything this clothing is represented from, it's the plot. That's what so many complainers (yes I will go under fire for this, but this is outside of the feminist/rape issue) mean, people focus too much on the character itself, modern day movie viewers want to identify with a character versus seeing analytical rights and wrongs of the plot and how pop culture adapts this. Karneef, you can be annoyed as much as you want, some of us look at this stuff as simply fashion and it's not a big deal.But then what do I know? I've never been raped.

Mission Creek 2012 Lineup

March 27th to April 1st is a magical time in Iowa City, spring is at large (at the risk of snow at any given second, cue eyeroll), the students more annoying than ever on a Friday night, and Mission Creek is underway. What is Mission Creek Festival? It is a magical time of the year where all Indie acts the festival can get their hands on performs once or maybe twice (via Little Village or Java Blend) during the week depending on their schedules. It's not just one venue either, the whole town is on it and that is the beauty of this music festival.

The Lineup this year had the ability to make me cry like a little girl. The Magnetic Fields, William Fitzsimmons, The War on Drugs, David Cross of Arrested Development fame, Rhys Chatham, Dirty Beaches, Bowerbirds and wait for it... SHARON VAN FUCKIN' ETTEN! Yes, folks, the woman that turns my ears into butter will be ten feet from me from either Gabes or The Mill (I have a gut feeling it's one of the two) as I tremble like a total girl and attempting to come up with something witty and unsexual to say to her that doesn't sound creepy when she signs her new CD for me at the end of the concert. Oh be still my beating heart, even typing this caused tears. *flutter*

Dressy Bessy does Christmas Again

Tammy Ealom and crew must really love Christmas from their first original carol, All the Right Reasons, back in 1999 for the record label Kindercore's Christmas album. Twee perfection. Then last year it was the witty electro Hopped Up (on Xmas) [Which I commented on the first link on December 3rd "Oh my God, this is the best birthday present to me, which is tomorrow" and Tammy, on her personal account graciously wished me a happy birthday and called me by my nickname which only meant she remembered me when we met about 2 or 3 years prior. What a moment and seriously, it made my entire year.] What more can the DB gang do to completely rock Christmas this year? How about slowing it down a little Zooey Deschanel style and being totally adorable in Mister Kringle? Yes, Dressy Bessy continues to inch towards making a Christmas album in which Tammy is signing when they come back to town.They are also giving away Mister Kringle for free on their facebook.

Sleigh Bells New Single

Alexis Krauss got some rest in the past year of hipster hibernation and looks more sexier and beautiful than before both in their promo and new single exclusively on Spin.com "Born to Lose" but in the negative title, they are so completely winning in a non-Charlie Sheen kind of way. Still in the similar vein of "Treats" where it was all sound and blast your eardrums into deafness, it's still the same on Born to Lose but definitely more polished. Perfection.

HFPA's Golden Picks for the Golden Globes

Always saving the awards for last, for I get long winded -- The Hollywood Foreign Press Association finally picked the nominations for the Golden Globes last Thursday and apparently it's the most snubbery season, according to closed-minded critics who wished Melissa McCarthy got it for "Mike and Molly" or at least "Bridesmaids" or Kirsten Dunst for "Melancholia". But one snub I have to agree with is why the hell Elizabeth Olsen didn't get nominated for "Martha Marcy May Marlene" but she'll get hers in time. So for now, here's a watered down score card with my predictions.

The Christmas festivities just keep on coming.... and I keep finding more things to get geeked out on (Michael Buble duet with the Puppini Sisters anyone?)

Uggie the Dog from The Artist

French director and writer Michel Hazanavicius probably did not envision where his small little film (and silent of all things shocking and postmodern!) to be taken as far as being in talks for Oscar nominations for Leading Actor (Jean Dujardin) and even the off-chance of a petition to give Uggie the Jack Russell terrier a special nomination, much to the annoyance to Susan Orlean that in the case of Rin Tin Tin being the legendary almost-Oscar winner back in the first year of the now established Award show, "...members of the Academy, anxious to establish the awards were serious and important, decided that giving an Oscar to a dog did not serve that end.'" It's a dog! I think we are much smarter nowadays to believe anyone can act... if that monkey can speak, animals more than enough have a capability to be just as prominent as George Clooney or Ryan Gosling in a movie -- either way, women want to take Uggie home or at least Consider_Uggie on twitter and facebook for a nomination! This is a dumb piece of news anyway but I'm all for rallying to get The Artist nominated somehow; sound production would probably be the effective win because apparently a French actor of Dujardin's stature could never have a chance against Leo DiCaprio this year. Just saying.

Open Letter to Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman

Dear Mr. Gleiberman,

I more than respect your opinion in your column in last month's Entertainment Weekly "6 Fabulous Silent Film Classics," but I was saddened as an extreme historical cinephile that I have not even heard of all of them except for Pandora's box, which is rightfully there. What I also have a problem is the common theme. Your first statement is "Want more like 'The Artist?'" Well, silent film is not one huge encompassing genre, and you as a movie columnist should know that!

If you want to get more readers, you have to include some more historic pieces that precurse our more favorited genres, such as "M" featuring the marvelous Peter Lorre pre-Casablanca love (although you did pen Conrad Veidt's 'The Man Who Laughs' and he is a very honorable mention) and especially Metropolis, and I'm not just saying that because it's my favorite, but because science fictions and thrillers are what today's movie-goers are the most attracted to. The more films you include that have made cultural impacts will make the readers more interested. I have no hate against Sunrise and the others, but you should have made a conscious effort to include movies that don't push all the stereotypes we so easily watched during Singing in the Rain.

While the Mayor of Munchkin-Land otherwise known as Ryan Seacrest is in talks for taking Matt Lauer's place on "The Today Show," what about his E! gig on the channel's news program, aka. my horrible horrible addiction I cannot get rid of, the same program recruits Neil Patrick's husband and co-father to their twins David Burtka and last night was his first night.

Yes, he was a little shaky and slow in the voice as he announced Kris Humphries coming out of the divorce shadow to discuss his plans for the future, but there's always room for improvement, although his voice will be something to get used to as it is a closed off almost guttural sound. Stahl is popping up everywhere, on E! on both Scouted AND another guilty pleasure Fashion Police last Friday, but now she's popping into the offices of my Zen: Essie Nail Polish where she mixes a color and even gets Essie to mix a special color that matches the Nylon's logo. WAAAAAANT!!!

Sophia Rossi gets FOAMy

As we all know, I get bored easily and need to change up my fixes -- as with magazines, my new found addictions to i-D Magazine and a growing fondness for West Coast's "Fashion, Ocean, Art and Music" FOAM magazine. FOAM seems to be like that girl in high school who managed to be a total jock-ette but still managed to have her hair look perfect and still manage to be incredibly girly in fashion and a total boy on a boogie board in the ocean. This, I like... this I heavily approve of.

So what could have really sparked my interest? Well, remember a little name of Sophia Rossi, hellogiggles co-owner and L.A. socialite in the least Paris Hilton sense of the word? Featured in their "The Gift Girls" segment she shows her enduring love for friend Charlotte Ronson's (which always gets a message on hellogiggles) lip gloss and other accessories. And I will answer Rossi's million dollar question: it used to be Mary Anne, now it's Stacey.
