What the bleep did you guys dress Anne Hathaway in on the cover? This does her beauty no justice other than the One Billion Rising top; you can totally style the shirt without making it look trashy!

I really don't think I want a magazine assuming and dictating how *I* should express myself; thanks for the valiant magazine theme but haven't you always given the distinction that your readers are strong independent women with their own minds?

Dear Fortune Feimster, I love you, you're hysterical but giving an "E-How" on how to say "I'm gay" is doing no favors to the progression of gay in popular culture -- it's taking it back to stereotypes. I understand stereotypes are funny but if there's a way to progress it, your article did no favors. But it's OK I still love every inch of your curly hair!

What They Did Right:

Making me love Anne more than I already do! (And in yellow Alexander McQueen)

Giving Eve Ensler work (Anne Uncensored)

Showing Kelly Osbourne and her awesomeness off even more!

Plus-size models!!! (We Like Your Look)
Seriously, I despise summer -- what a way to start a post after a two week hiatus of revising creative projects but I do despise late summer probably the worst.

When talking to a certain beautiful female, she corrected me when I said that. "Well, the Celtic wheel of the year says it is late summer since midsummer (the 21st is also known to be the first day of summer as well)."

Sometimes I forget that I live on another planet.

And here's five things that have been making me happy on Planet B (not withstanding Planet Z)

Dear Disney and Tim Burton, Don't Fuck This Up!!

Completed as of June 25th, Disney and Tim Burton will once more be back together with the strangest movie-child. Well, not the strangest since the 1984 live action short of "Frankenweenie" was and is a portion of the Holy Grail to the Burtonites. And what better way to make a longer movie than to use Burton's stop motion animation that put him on the map. But what lesser Burtonites don't realize, this new movie merges his two first shorts together. Vincent (which is elegant and so wonderfully early Burton before Alice in Wonderland happened) and Frankenweenie.

But should we really be worried? Maybe. That's what movie speculation amongst friends is for!

Watch the trailer and we'll talk. Expect Frankenweenie in theaters October 5th!!

"Katy Perry, Consider Yourself Schooled!"

Because that's all I have for a blurb, so I'll let Le Kid take over this explanation.

Leela Lee Takes Angry Little Girls to Further Heights

What would be more magical than to see Kim, Disenchanted Deborah, Loco Maria, and the other little girls with big problems in animated shorts? Unfortunately I can answer that rhetorical question two ways, buying a five dollar ALG t-shirt at Silver Spider and the fact that MNet is taking a line-up of ALG episodes for their 2012-2013 season. Dates? That's still TBD but let us bask in this happiness through monstersandcritics.com

.Is Healthy the New Skinny?

I have truly given up on the whole crap of sizeism. If someone is too small it's discrimination if you say something close to "Twiggy" or too skinny and if someone is too large you hear the word fat or pig and if someone is in the middle, they're just not good enough. So in light of that, I have finally decided to go with whether women have full hips or not. And thank you Jesus... and BUST Magazine... and Vogue Italia for making me a bigger pervert for beautiful women as three "plus size" models with real curves took over the cover and pages of Vogue Italia... last year but I'm enjoying them now. Now this is beauty or am I just being biased and beautyist?

2012 Candidates for Song of the Summer

Buying into all of Entertainment News beliefs that Carly Rae Jepsen (I hate myself for knowing that name)'s hit song "Call Me Maybe" is the song of the summer is not the smartest thing, because as a friend told  me once that I am a "music guru" (I have to amp up my ego right now, my parents are coming into town later!) and my powers of persuasion through all that is voguegasmtastic is well done. Here are my candidates although I truly know that Alex Saidac's "Stay in the Moment" is the winner. And the fact I can't get the song out of my head. Vote in the comments section!

Dear Glamour, if you're so concerned with weight stereotype (The Secret Way People Judge You) then why don't you help out the cause a little by covering larger women's lifestyles? And you do realize some people really don't care about being judged -- some can laugh it off it's not all out discrimination.

(Conti'd) It's a fixed study when you're giving black and white terms to show how shallow the human race really is.

Not everyone fits into your three standards of body size -- no matter how progressive you are with a pro-plus agenda

"Health Insight" truly insults my intelligence. I ate far more than she did and worked out without one complaint when I was losing my weight!

Convincing me to DOWNLOAD Regina Spektor's new album (obsessed!/it's on) Bitch please I'm buying the CD.

Making Katharine McPhee's face look lie a Barbie! Retouch much?

What They Did Right

  • Making Me Mist Over (My Father Really Was Superman)
  • Asking adult film stars on sex, they would know from trial and error versus the scientific stuff (...that's what sex is all about, right?)

I look at Nikki Blonsky and actually wish I had that body.
It's "May the fourth be with you," a little after 9:30 and I'm waiting for the bus to take off - extremely high-exhausted on an iced coffee, barely twitching and having a few tears over a poster I saw tonight at the Union Bar protest, or, what it evolved to as a sizeism education "protest."

Here's the bones of it here: Jordan Ramos was discriminated against dancing on a some-what dangerous platform at Iowa City bar Union Bar, where girls can freely dance on -- well not so freely as the bouncer of the platform said she was "too fat" and "looked pregnant" as these things were said to her face while Ramos's friends and other women have attested, both that night and in the past, having been looked at with that classic male gaze starting from head to toe on being judged who is "pretty enough" to dance on the platform which has recently been taken out for security measures.

While it's never been intentional like the article says, and, if on this infamous night in Ramos's life, the bouncer clarified it was more about a "weight of people" as capacity and  not about her body itself, we would not have a problem. But in a blind moment, the allegation of the words of fat and pregnant being used -- it's enough for women and sensitive men to be pissed off at the typical "impossible standards of beauty." Which I'm not planning on listing what these standards are, because any woman knows what they are, unfortunately.

Is it any wonder why these standards exist? Healthy food and workout equipment is expensive, I'd hate to get a little Jamie Oliver here but it's a well known fact for women who take initiative of their own bodies in a healthy lifestyle, whether it is through the standards or for themselves. There's a little sizeism in that, even if it is self induced. So what is the ideal for everyone?

I value those women who work for their bodies because they were truly unhappy with their bodies in a hopeless almost suicidal way for any other reason but the "impossible standards," plus, these women are probably more objective about the topic of sizeism, or how it looks, or maybe insecurity of sizeism itself in straddling that difficult gray line yet hoping not to offend anyone when exercising their opinions. But that's sizeism too.

My Story

Ped Mall Protest, May 4th, 2012
I have struggled in the past few days since Friday of what the actual goal of this post is to be; and honestly, I can't say a damn thing unless it is an emotional platform for me to tap dance all over. In my view, everyone is OK to dance where ever in the case of Ramos's but I do not care for dancing and people passively aggressively pressure me into doing it. My 30 pound heavier self did used to dance back when I moved here to Iowa City, having delved into a bar scene only to realize it wasn't my thing -- and then all of a sudden, blank, my body didn't want to dance after awhile. I deluded myself for awhile there that it was probably my own body.

Since high school I never had a problem with my body, I was so far within my mind, taking care of my mental health while ADHD and Depression medication was being forced down my throat in trying to figure out what was wrong with me to all the authority figures in my life, including passive-aggressively abusive parents -- a sensitive soul and writer, there is obviously something wrong with that in a rural small town Iowa. I even brought pilates into the unofficial curriculum in physical education because I was fascinated with a low maintenance work out that didn't involve my feeling shaky and sick afterwards. Only once did the wrestlers walk to the room where I and a few other people did the pilates and shouted "You all look like pigs rolling around." I wasn't offended, I laughed at the image. Pigs are happy animals (cut to Rex Harrison's song in Dr. Doolittle).

Coming into college I was able to give my mind a break and it was only after reliving my adolescence and community college, I came into the University of Iowa knowing I wanted to plant my roots here with having more sensitive writerly souls around me. But my shade of sensitive writerly type wasn't around me so I struggled to conform, still body was no issue and I danced and drank mildly. (Spending most of my weekends in my childhood at a family-owned tavern made me null to the bar life so I never went out too often unless I was singing karaoke at the gay bar, still do, just not as often.) I danced, but something made me completely stop. We could say it was insecurity but I'm not entirely sure what it was.

I was a 3 year graduating student of 2009 and had to leave my student job so I had nothing going for me for about a year until the natural  progression of things started to come into place Spring 2010. I was allowed to mope in depression for awhile until I stumbled (via tumbler) onto livestrong.com, tried it out for a few weeks. Since that day, weighing 183.6 and cutting out mayonnaise and all dressings and drinking more tea, Green Giant steamed vegetable packs, discovering hula hooping and hoop dance (although I suck at tricks) I have zeroed down to a 143 [But since that happened I've graduated to level 2 of working harder at losing the last ten pounds, fluctuating up and down but it's a work in progress] but most importantly, a size 11/12 and rediscovering my love for fashion and dresses which I discarded when I was a teenager because my mother used to choose my clothes for me (I'm not kidding). But, I've stopped bothering weighing and have went on to measuring my body instead and I still hope to get an inch off of all the areas.

But I've never been attacked for my weight, unless if sizeism is like an abstraction like abuse and you can abuse your own body mentally with expectations, then yes, I have done that to myself -- so there are more than one shade to sizeism. But your mind suddenly changes on these things when on a weekend in your hometown with extended family, most of the weight lost, and your aunt says so gleefully, "It's so great that you have grown into your looks" as if I never had looks before. Ouch.

But I suppose the political question would be: but aren't you adhering to some sort of feminine ideal? Aren't you being sizeist in wanting to shrink up your body a little more? Well, not necessarily, I think as long as your bone structure matches what is filled out, I have no problem with that and if it doesn't, it's your choice I don't judge. As a professional full time woman lover, I in fact love the large boned thicker women -- but for myself, I knew that I wasn't that type of body and I have to work harder to get that perfect ratio of structure and cushion and balance isn't my best forte. And yeah, I suppose I am being sizeist, but like I said earlier, insecurely sizeist. No one is going to agree on everything. I also haven't been in a dancing club lately to really give how I feel about larger people dancing, of which, I would have no problem with that because I would be too busy being lost in my head about the ideology and evolution of dancing and sexuality. Now if you excuse  me, Momma needs a cupcake...

Would Marilyn Monroe Get On the Union Bar Platform?

(I really wasn't kidding about that cupcake). On May 4th at the protest, it was a bubbling burst of emotions from this cupcake-eating girl because she saw a poster that made her cry a little. "Would Marilyn Get In?" it  asked with this iconic picture with that gorgeous white swim suit. Once more, I can't explain why I got so emotional, maybe after a huge resurgence of Monroe movies, watching Smash religiously and staring at Marilyn long enough to see the real Norma or attempting to find that "it" thing about her, but it was probably because she understood what it was like to be on both ends of this issue.

Yeah her body is as manufactured as her stage name, but I have to wonder more than whether or not if she was allowed to be up on the platform (I would guess yes because her "it"-ness would let her up) is would she find a middle line sizeism in having been both sizes? Does that insight give a person more sensitivity or, dare I say it "special powers?" No, I don't want to think about that that much, but I think it would offer a better insight, on one hand if you're happy and large yet healthy you'll be attacked and on the other, you can be fit, happy in a size 12 skin and just enjoy working out for the adrenaline and the feel-goods you'll still be attacked. I guess I can water this whole post down to that. No one is safe.

So what would make this change? Here's a list.

  1. Pop culture catching on with a total sweep of not retouching celebrities on magazine (half-check)
  2. The fashion industry changing the definition of plus size from size 10 to size 18 +
  3. GIVE WOMEN A GODDAMNED BREAK ALREADY! Men, we are already smarter than you at an earlier age, we can multitask and are less emotional than you -- so stop making yourselves feel like Gods by saying if a woman is fat or unattractive.
  4. The fashion industry changing certain positions from making a larger woman shrink her body in editorial poses to show off the curves
  5. The news (entertainment or otherwise) needs to change the rules of journalism, don't give one dimensional stories about the dangers of weight or constant victimization, talk about more good things on the subject instead of "scaring people into health."
  6. Make models eat cupcakes. (but that's sizeist)
Cleaning out my soul about a week ago from blog posts two days in a row, I am back after a half week in my hometown enjoying a grandkid "shot"-a-long of 80s and 90s hits through the liquor cabinet (not kidding) and buying a kickass bag, picture below for 15 bucks. Looks like my hometown has some taste I never knew it had! But now back to the important cultural stuff...

Milk and Eggs
As shocking as this is to some people, I do not get crushes on girls on a face-to-face value. But upon seeing Jordan Sellergren (otherwise known as Milk and Eggs) at Public Space 1 the first time, I'll tell you, MAJOR girl crush. She's somewhere between Emmylou Harris and Joanna Newsom.I definitely detect Newsom in the gentleness of her vocals that sounded perfect with KRUI's sound system.

Thankful for all non-locals, her newest album is streamable here but careful, some of the songs may get trapped in your head badly.

Did I mention I felt like I was blushing for most of her half hour?

New Florence and the Machine

Was I the only one who made this immediate connection?
From a woman who is amazing to a woman who I wish  could be... Florence Welch or it seems like lately Generation Y's own Stevie Nicks (yes I just went there). The Machine is back up and running as of Halloween, the day "Ceremonials" comes out. "What the Water Gave Me" was like something a Gothic Polyphonic Spree, now the latest from the red-headed piece of perfection is "Shake It Out" which has a category all on its own. Album cover and track list already has been leaked and this looks so promising I think I just died of a squeeattack. Doesn't the cover make her look like a Dante Gabriel Rossetti's painting?

Someone Needs Correspondence Letter Lessons... American Apparel vs. Nancy Upton

The winner is Upton! But instead of getting the last laugh like she had hoped, or perhaps did despite American Apparel's Creative Director Iris Alonzo's mild passive aggressive statements in an open letter she sent to Upton congratulating her on the win but also spent many paragraphs elaborating an apology that was never actually there.
"It’s a shame that your project attempts to discredit the positive intentions of our challenge based on your personal distaste for our use of light-hearted language, and that “bootylicous” was too much for you to handle. While we may be a bit TOO inspired by BeyoncĂ©, and do have a tendency to occasionally go pun-crazy, we try not to take ourselves too seriously around here."
Well thank you, Alonzo, (we think) but the point of Upton taking those pictures for her tumblr was showing the sad truth that anyone with a size bigger than 12 is going to be shunned and taken in by Lane Bryant (who probably has less slutty clothes than what you have) before getting a modeling gig with American Apparel. It's not about weight or size as it is the actual positioning and shrinking the female model to make her look smaller to the camera. Either way, she's going to be marketed as a little smaller than the "average" woman which is normal in the fashion world. (Although I do commend Kaela Humphries for walking during fashion week for Richie Rich and Svedka)  Do I have room to talk? I think so, as being a previous large girl. Upton, keep taking those pictures.

Emmy the Great Melts Faces Once More

There are three singers/bands who I consistently quote on my FB wall on a daily basis: Stars, Charlotte Martin and Emmy the Great. Emmy is once more quotable in her latest video of "Paper Forest (In the Afterglow of the Rapture) sings as she observes an older woman in her daily grief, "But I'm blessed - just to be, more or less - standing in the afterglow of rapture with the words the rapture left." You just want to hug her if you know where the lyrics from "Virtue" came from -- her husband leaving her for the church. Emma, you're wonderful!

SHARAA! (in best Ozzy impression)

Just in time for fall, the resident vocal hot chocolate of my mp3 player (Josh Groban would be a dark chocolate mocha) is unleashing a new album, Shara Worden or better known by her project name My Brightest Diamond. But her new album is considered as an experiment as she explains, "This next record I completely gave up the rock and just decided to make acoustic music and so I really focused on the chamber ensemble as a center piece rather than being as the icing on the cake. I really wanted to build the music from the ensemble as the basis for it." The first single, Be Brave, is deeply theatrical and almost bat-shit crazy (if not for the masks and makeup in the video) so it's as if she's never left my ear buds. "All Things Will Unwind" is due to be released October 19th. Free download here.

Listen to Austra's "Identity" While Reading the Next Post
To another chocolate-toned vocalist with a great operatic tone, Katie Stelmanis, doesn't completely annoy me with her overt message of the latest from the Canada Electronic band Austra. The B-side to their latest single, "Spellwork," is another piece of haunting majesty that seems to be Austra's schtick as Stelmanis sings "Strangers don't know me but love to control me." This is a perfection segue to the next and final criteria.

Chaz Bono Dances Way Into Prime Time Hearts

All of you may remember my initial twitter angst when it was announced that rock royalty's son Chaz Bono would be on Dancing With the Stars, but trans-education has to start somewhere, right? And despite my anti-ABC prime time, I cannot tear my eyes away as it started this week. The channel was left on as I was cleaning my purse out and he came on, limbs a little scattered, but it was decently well done for the first week. He has his Dad's cheerful ambiance and smile, and his mother's sense of rhythm and grace. Hate to break it to you original-Hairspray lovers who think Ricki Lake will win. It's Chaz's year.

Or at least for Cher and the LGBT enthusiasts, ABC has employed extra security just in case the naysayers may do something to the loveable Bono. But it's anyone's guess if something will actually happen. But not all conservatives are freaking out that Chaz Bono may "damage the younger generations" by being on the dancing reality show just for simply for once being a female. This is what the trans community calls cis-phobia, and even to a conservative journalist Douglas MacKinnon this is cis-phobia with Keith Ablow of FOX News at its finest.

Even if Chaz wouldn't win, I think he would be perfection at second or third, just to know that we have come this far to have Carson Kressley (of all the men in queedom) to be on the show. And after the Emmy's tolerance of  Lesbian host Jane Lynch, a win for the plus-size Melissa McCarthy (yeah girl!) and for Game of Thrones's little nugget Peter Dinklage and the Modern Family sweep that involves a gay-married couple. You would think the way prime-time TV is going that Bono would get good reception, which he will in the weeks to pass.

Tis the season for hit-or-miss trending topics that range from impending fashion trends to some good honest new sitcoms coming on TV (Goodbye Charlie Party-Boy Sheen and holla for a Cedar Rapids born and bred Ashton Kutcher). But as for my personal tastes, it's been stale for a few weeks until I'm finally able to compile enough for this weeks "Hot Hot Love" Vspot.

Rosi Golan Concert

Rosi Golan Little Village Live at Public Space 1 August 31st

This show truly blew my face off into a million pieces and if things went the way I had hoped, I would have scored the best free concert of my life. Rosi, with her new release of "Lead Balloon", had been on tour with Iowa City native Jason Reeves and stopped by Public Space 1 (Hipster Basement) for Little Village Live before playing the Mill later that night.

So maybe radio-people lost the internet connection for a few minutes and Rosi sat down on the bench in front of me, mind you there are only 5 people there as viewers and she personally asked me if I wanted a spot on her guest list for the Mill that night, she was missing one -- and was asking around for a gluten-free meal. Naturally since I'm a God at recommendations (not really), I suggested Mama's and had to decline the offer (broke girl + cab money, you know.) FAIL! It would have been epic. I had listened to her for about 2 years with her chirpy "Shine" and a date-worthy duet with William Fitzsimmons "Hazy." So really, this was epic and face-melting.

Bitchy "Cruel" Analysis

Another blog-analysis that would make everyone at Bitch Media proud... it would be more effective to show their opinion of Suckerpunch but both the bloggers and the zine writers have been getting on my last nerve. Where does art and interpretation begin and end or is it interchangeable? And if it is interchangeable, where in gay hell do they get off creating every single pop media that comes their way like it's misogynist even if it isn't? But with my irritation aside, this is a good pondering analysis. What does St. Vincent say to you? (She says to me she's an electric guitar rock Goddess)

Aqua replaces Barbie Girl to "Fucking like Robots"

By the power of Scandi-pop I give you... Aqua. Really? Trading in their barbies for robots and being a "Playmate to Jesus" at least they are consistent! Just finding out about this new double A-side single today, I find myself oddly excited between Le Kid burning up blogs all over the place and their grandparents in song, Aqua, coming back. I love me some shamelessly slutty-slutty dance music, myself.

Christina Ricci showing love-filled angst of short girl fashion

Christina Ricci, 90s child star and now a stunning 60s Pan Am stewardess tells Nylon the perfect fashion commandment, possibly without even knowing it. "When you're as short as me, you have to kind of know [your] proportions. I spend so much time in fittings and looking in the mirror, so at a certain point you kind of become aware of what works." Ricci, at 5'1" is probably smaller than the average woman at 5'4" like me, but she really does speak the truth on how to dress for your size and height. Thank you!!

Kathleen Edwards feat. Bon Iver "Wapusk"

As a contender for a perfect Fall song (Bon Iver and Justin Vernon have a gift for making music sound fall-like), Edwards and Vernon create some hot hot sex in the sheets and music  with "Wapusk." As for the question if this will be on a future Bon Iver album? Only time will tell.

Next XL Fashion Model?

American Apparel is looking for the Next XL Fashion Model, and it could be anyone that is a healthy size 12 (really?) even Nancy Upton, tumblr extraordinaire for  the account extrawiggleroom. I'm starting to see a pattern when it comes to women sizes, and blogger Kelsey Wallace touches base on this: if the acceptable model size is too small she's considered under-nourished even if she could be healthy and a plus size model is too large, healthy or not, have more rules on posing to actually look thinner.

Is American Apparel going to make this barrier even wider, like a facebook commenter on this article said, "leaving a stamp on her forehead of FAT GIRL" So American Apparel shouldn't bother finding an XL lady and just keep hiring girls that give me the effect of wanting to shove an entire extra large pizza in their mouth? While many advertising campaigns are moving forward with body-acceptance yet the standards of beauty is still stuck in drive and at the fork at the road of contradictions. Need a help there, fashion week?

(I'm not much of a fan of any of those pictures, as they are seeming to dig the knife in a little more for any woman larger than I am and being a previous "fat girl" I cannot seem to look away at the above picture without feeling a mixture of "Yeah, girl!" and disgusted at it. Is there a middle line between making fun of weight versus objectifying it?)

Impending album for Alt-Christmas Music lovers...

Zooey Deschanel in Elf

Although October is too soon for a Christmas album, Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward are back together making some sweet-sweet Indie music. But this time, they are tackling some Christmas standards, which makes the whole Bing Crosby-Holiday Inn music seem less grating including a duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" harkening Deschanel back a few years when she sang with Will Ferrell in the holiday comedy"Elf". I am a lover of original Alt-Christmas (and you all cannot WAIT for that playlist, I can tell), if there is one on the album that sounds good, I'm not going to deny the power of Zooey. Can anyone really deny her? Besides the stereogum elitists?
While it wasn't too painful coming up with this week's list, oddly placed in the middle of the week when I should be - oh I don't know - not spending money on a Sweet and Sara vegan peanut butter s'more and some metromint spearmint water ... I consider this a necessity for this disgusting heat, as the mint almost helps hydrate more than the water... - instead of grocery shopping and cleaning my apartment. So in lieu of the internet being messed up at my apartment, I am here at the library giving you the 7 most tingly things that have happened to me in the past 2 weeks.

New Super-Amazing clothing essential

As I promise a Summer-Must-Have post in the near future complete with pictures, I cannot wait any longer to show off this cute little number I found at Ragstock for five dollars... and then I bought a hoodie there, which may or may not appear in the Autumn-Must-Have post for TWO DOLLARS! ... anyway enough of my gloating and look at this cute little number.

This is a description of what I consider a piece of clothing very Nylon (Magazine), something that is slightly neon and can be switched up in any attitude. The only thing I don't like about it (other than the high voltage pink which is OK but not my favorite color in the world) is the spaghetti straps. I have very rounded shoulders and thin straps tend not to not like this type of shoulder. But the elastic underbust looks great on my shape and the pockets! Oh the pockets is what made me fall in love with it along with the almost-baby-doll look to the top.

My mission for this top is to get a plain crew neck white or black t-shirt and wear it underneath this for fall. As Cinderella sang, "This is love."

Free Music

What I love most in life (besides a cute girl... you know who you are) is late night last.fm free download searches. But sometimes, like a cute girl, free music just happens to you. Allow me to distribute.

**Link!** The Postelles cover Joe Jones "California Sun" **Link!**

This song is absolutely fantastic for this fucking awful weather and even better imagining Gidget and every bad beach movie to the tune of these guys. Speaking of Gidget, it's on this Sunday on Turner Classic!

**Link!** Dum Dum Girls "Coming Down" **Link!**

Fuzzy and slightly reminiscent of the 90s makes you think something between twee and full-out Daria attitude, the Dum Dum Girls are back with their impending release of their sophomore album "Only in Dreams" coming out September 27. I will be getting back to Dee Dee in another project she took part in covering the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Teenage Lust."

**Link!** Madison's "Hot Hot Love (Kids at the Bar Remix) **Link!**

Sometimes you just need a good loud electonic vibe and while I'm not the biggest remix hoarder, I support any free music from Madison 'cos well, one cannot ignore her impending message of taking over the world.

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside

I love all music and somehow finds a little solace in a bluegrassy or jazzish feel in live music, mostly just live. So when I heard Jolie Holland was in town doing the Intimate Series at the historical Englert Theater, I was on board for ushering. Then... Portland's own Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside happened to me. Sallie looking like a piece of 90s twee adorableness with large glasses and a mass of curly hair, I fell in love with her slight Buddy Holly hiccup and the fact it was a real bass melting my face. I love their subtly.

**Click!** Sallie and Crew's facebook **Click!**

The Civil Wars

Another band I must recommend for their subtly, sounding like a mix of something bluegrassy from "Barton Hollow" to completely revamping the Jackson 5 in a lo-fi cover of "I Want You Back" but best known for their biggest hit on Grey's Anatomy "Poison and Wine", John Paul White and Joy Williams, already an indie star in her own right, The Civil Wars have melted my face and I have yet to recover from John Paul's hotness. Yes I said it, this man is beautiful, like I have mentioned on facebook already he is a man-baby of Sirius Black and Johnny Depp. *drool*

Kardashian Nail Polish

Everyone either loves to hate or hates to love the Kardashians but you know, I think they are hilarious. Kris Jenner is like a copy of my mother in most clips, Kim as you watch her closely enough is one big ball of paranoid OCD-ness and Khloe? Well she's just hilarious and makes all the shows worth watching (such as her playing with her blow-up giraffe she named Henry). But what about the line of nail polish that is coming out this winter but everyone already got all the swatches in advance? Truthfully, I think it's a little much but if they want to put a stamp on the fashion world -- why not? Khloe should be a covergirl for her beautiful Amazonic size. But check out the colors... if I had to get any of them definitely "Khloe had a little Lam Lam" despite its moronic title. That one would be the dark-dark blue green up on the first row. But is it just me or do the colors look a little biased to the Kardashian's dark skin tones? Think about that...

Hangover Owls Tumbling

oh i get it! owls are like humans *headpalm*
Since everyone already knows that this blog is practically a love letter to Nylon Magazine, I'm sharing a site from their widget on netvibes of a website they recommended on their weekly Song + Site of the Day. Now since I have the great gift of never having the ability to actually be hung over or can give a sympathetic giggle, I somehow see the hilarity of the owls looking the way they do. And we all know I love owls.

Dum Dum Girls do Jesus...

... and Mary Chain's "Teenage Lust." Or more appropriately Dee Dee from The Dum Dum Girls and Tamaryn covered this in a project called Les Demoniaques, either way, it's awesome.  Like the covers I love, I actually have never heard the original but I can only guess it's less mid-summer suffocatingly hot as this one. It's sexy!

I love clothes. And that's rather apparent - especially the way I shop. So I intend to give away a few of my "tricks of the trade," not in the way of taste as I have in previous posts, but in the technique of shopping. It's generally pretty simple and easy but some people really do blindly shop and think that something is perfectly proportionate to their body type. Which leads to the first bullet point, know your body, as stereotypical as that sounds in terms of self love - but you spend the most time in your body whether knowing your measurements or weight, or just knowing what you look good in without advice from Cosmo or Glamour.

Example? Only I can relate to personal experience - sometimes I "binge" on 2 AM google searches about current fashion trends I know what works or what doesn't work for me. This leads to the biggest rant about current trends I really dislike.

1. Tunic tops with heavy hip areas in shape of diagonal sides. I am lucky that I have a pure hour glass shape that I don't need that added weight but if I see a top I really like and I don't see the bottom shape right away, I get so amped up for nothing and end up disappointed. I hate that. You can always tell if a store is catered to certain body sizes by these kind of tunic tops.

Erratic hems like this can either shrink you to an oompa loompa or overemphasize the round of your lower stomach.

2. Shirts with butterfly sleeves. Please, just don't! I have put on these kind of shirts because I like the pattern or how it looks on the hanger. That's another good thing to remember when shopping without a dressing room. It won't hang on you like it does on the hanger. The sleeve starts about an inch under the armpit leaving it for women with smaller breasts to compensate to look more hour-glass with their wide hips. But with wide hips also comes over emphasizing the mid-section and curve, how thin do you need to look? I don't need it but when there's an amazing black t-shirt with a kitschy design of an animated owl... dammit Ragstock!

Only worthy if you have larger breasts and smaller hips.

If you do end up finding a top that seems interesting, is right for your body but you are still not one-hundred percent sure, the second thing to do after falling in love with a top is what I call "the tug rule" which involves discovering the proportion of the desired top to your body.

For beginners, put the shirt up to you, holding both ends (purse between feet of course) under the arm pit, tug slightly to the contour of your chest area making sure you will look boobalicious.

Yes?

Then check waist by the same way. The more you do this the more you are able to do it even without putting the shirt up to you, merely leaving it on the hanger and tugging, and you will know immediately if its the correct size for you. Sometimes you don't have to look at the size tag, especially if you go to secondhand stores where, if you look hard enough, you can shop for anything if its of interest. If it doesn't one-hundred percent fit even after waist size, if its half an inch bigger, bobby pins; if its half an inch smaller, buy a seam ripper or fabric scissors.

I live for this rule and have been able to buy many awesome tops and fixing them myself. You can even go further like a friend of mine and actively find similar fabric and seam rip then sewing it back up according to your body size. In fact, I would love to do this - Home Ec. teacher in high school said I had a good steady hand for sewing.

I mentioned a paragraph ago, "if you go to secondhand stores where, if you look hard enough you can shop for anything if its of interest." My favorite local secondhand store, Revival, I can get so much as a small to fit and I try never to question or analyze it, not even for this blog. I'm superstitious like that. You can tell what kind of stores are to your personality - which comes to the third - know the store - what is their size chart? If you're not able to know that definitely try one of every size on and relate it to your body. Never let the system that is the "every woman must be a size 12" get to you, because not every store is alike, especially alt-indie stores. So really, it's good to be a hipster about these things.
